Debian's Nvidia binary drivers from Synaptic don't work?

Post by NothingMuchHereToSay »

I've never had luck with the drivers from Nvidia in synaptic. Basically, when I launch TF2 using the drivers from Nvidia (su sh nvidia-drivers) it works flawlessly, however, when I uninstall the binary from the Nvidia website and install the synaptic packages, I can't get anything to launch, I even installed the ia32-libs packages and the GLX-32 libraries from Synaptic, I just don't understand why I can't get anything to launch. For multiarch, I've tried the OpenCL i386 stuff, but if I try to install other stuff like "nvidia-glx" it will uninstall the 64bit libraries.

I've had this problem since Debian Squeeze, I've upgraded to sid to get all of the updates to get rid of a bug that severely hurts gameplay in TF2. I've even tried to switch from Auto to Manual mode for the nvidia module.
sudo update-alternatives --config glx

There are 2 choices for the alternative glx (providing /usr/lib/glx).

Selection Path Priority Status
------------------------------------------------------------
0 /usr/lib/nvidia 100 auto mode
1 /usr/lib/mesa-diverted 5 manual mode
* 2 /usr/lib/nvidia 100 manual mode

Press enter to keep the current choice[*], or type selection number:
My specs:

Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz; stock speed
3GB DDR2 RAM
Nvidia GeForce 9800GT

Any help would be appreciated.

So why are you asking it here? Obviously it's some problem with debian packages. Not Wine or nVidia drivers.

Hi,

nvidia-glx is the right package for your card. You don't need 'alternatives'. However, for Multiarch, the 32 bit Nvidia drivers for 64 bits systems are currently broken on Wheezy/Sid.

See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=640499

The bug thread there includes a patch, and links to private Debian binary packages that help resolve the problem. http://twolife.be/debian/todo/xvmc/

ia32libs will need to be removed in order to install the multiarch 32 bit packages. I could not install the multiarch package ia32-libs-i386:i386 either, so installed some of the dependent libraries separately. There are lots of them & I don't know which ones are critical. Right now, multiarch seems to me to be a work in progress. :(

Regards,
Peter

Should be fixed now. :)
