Wine not working in Mint 15

Post by stlblues1226 »

I am new to Mint and Wine. I know just enough about what I'm doing to really screw things up (as you will no doubt soon find out). Mint 15 came with Wine 1.4 and I tried to install 1.6 and here is the error message I get in the terminal window. I wasn't sure how much to include so here's everything. Hope it's not too much (actual error at the bottom):

wine1.6 is already the newest version.
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
wine1.6 : Depends: wine1.6-i386 (= 1:1.6.1-0ubuntu1~ppa1~precise1)
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

I have tried this a couple of times, but I keep getting the error above. I also cannot even get the Wine box to open when I select configure Wine from the Mint menu. I click it and nothing happens. I'm sure it's something I've done, so please be kind when explaining what dumb thing I've most likely done. I really want to get this working because if this does work, I plan to dump Windows completely.

Thanks in advance for any help. Also, if you need any other information just tell me exactly how to get the information you need and I'll gladly do it. Just please remember to be as specific as possible.

Packaging and package manager issues are not Wine issues. Ask for help on the Mint forum for the error message from your package manager.

As for winecfg, what happens when you run it from a terminal?

After that, when I went through Menu, it started working again, but it appears to be Wine 1.4 and not 1.6 and I'm not sure how to get the newer version. Trying to upgrade is when I ran into all the problems. Thanks for your help. Any suggestions on the best way to upgrade to 1.6? Again, being new to Wine and Mint, the more detail, the better. Fewer chances for me to screw it up.

You should be able to upgrade through your package manager, the same way you would upgrade any other package. If you don't know how to use your package manager, ask for help on the Mint forum. I don't use Mint, so I can't help you with it, and in any case, it's not a Wine issue.
