Error -installing IBM Visualage COBOL requires at least 64M

Post by chaat »

When attemping to install the IBM Visual age COBOL compiler on pc with 16GB of memory running Lubuntu 12.04 64 bit, I receive an error which indicates that a minimum of 64M of memory is required.

I executed the install program SETUP.EXE from the command line. Here is the output from that command.

I am new to linux / wine. I have been able to install this program on a Lubuntu 11.10 64 bit os running in a 2GB VMware virtual machine using wine 1.3x (one of the latest 1.3 development version).

I'm attempting to make the move to Linux and would really like to be able to run this compiler in WINE.

Any assistance / guidance would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Martin Gregorie

Have you looked at any of the native Linux COBOL implementations?

If you want to make the move to Linux and have source code, you'd be
better off using native tools and compilers rather than those that can
only run with the aid of a Windows->Linux API translator like Wine.

I haven't written COBOL for years, so bear with a reverse C analogy:
when I write C on a Linux box I use the native GNU C compiler - of
course! - but if I need the same code to run on a Windows system I use
the gjgpp compiler (a native port of GNU C to Windows) rather than
installing Cygwyn (the equivalent to Wine in reverse) and using a
compiler that generates executables that can only run on Winboxes with
Cygwin installed.

The best-known COBOL for *nix systems is Microfocus COBOL, but of course
that isn't free. OTOH there are several free versions, such as GNU COBOL
which, like several other language implementations (FORTRAN 77 and Java
to name two), is a front end for the GNU C compiler and so should
compile and run on any system that uses GNU C.

Martin,

the reason I'm attempting to use this COBOL compiler is because i write code for deployment on an IBM mainframe running Z/OS. I do not use the IBM VISUAL AGE COBOL compiler to generate any executable modules.

I do most of my initial coding on my pc and then migrate the source code to the mainframe for execution. For this reason, I use the IBM VISUAL AGE COBOL compiler as it is almost an exact match to the IBM ENTERPRISE COBOL compiler that we use on the mainframe. That way I can minimize the number of compile errors on the mainframe as the syntax checking is almost identical between the two compilers.

I'm attempting to convert my pc to run Linux so I would like to run the IBM VISUAL AGE COBOL compiler using WINE.

I did see some links to a wiki for issues with the Installshield product

http://wiki.jswindle.com/index.php/Wine_InstallShield

I'll study the suggestions in the above WIKI and see if that helps resolve the issue that i'm encountering.

OK, thanks for the explanation. That makes perfect sense: all COBOL
compilers are not equal thanks to the portability issues that result
from the hardware and/or OS-specific extensions that every COBOL
compiler seems to have.

Are you trying to install in a remote drive? Or just run the installer
from a remote drive? You should try starting the install from a local
drive to see if it makes any difference.
