Can't get anything to run on WINE using Nvidia drivers

Post by Michelj »

Hi, I'm moving my games from my laptop to my desktop, however the games don't run. I can get installation screens, loading screens etc. but nothing past that. Have followed all instructions from AppDB and have everything set up the same as on my laptop where the games work.

I have a feeling it has something to do with the nvidia proprietary drivers (using the xorg-edgers PPA). Here's what I'm getting:

Code: Select all

Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x0097690d).

System information:
    Wine build: wine-1.4-rc6
    Platform: i386
    Host system: Linux
    Host version: 2.6.38-13-generic
This one I had to write out without C+P because the POL output doesn't let me copy:

Code: Select all

fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x33ea14,0x00000000), stub!
fixme:d3d:swapchain_init Add OpenGL context recreation support to context_validate_onscreen_formats
err:wgl:internal_SetPixelFormat Invalid operation on root_window
I'm using Linux Mint 11 LXDE and Wine 1.4 RC6 (assuming it will update to 1.4 from the PPA soon). The games I'm trying to get to work are Civilization V and Victoria II.

Thanks :)

Have you installed 32-bit libopengl libraries that are part of the driver?

I think so, glxgears works fine. Could you tell me the names of the packages just in case?

Maybe Wine isn't reading the correct path to the libraries? Wouldn't know how to fix that.

And you have 32-bit version of glxgears I presume? On a 64-bit system?

Yeah... I was trying to avoid doing that. I've one it now and once I reinstall the games, I'll see if it worked.

I have a 32bit system, so yeah glxgears is 32 bit too :P

I reinstalled Wine, still get the same errors. Would purging then reinstalling make a difference? I would prefer not to do it because it means reinstalling the games, libs, etc under prefixes

Who said it to you that with Wine reinstalling you need to reinstall all the games and the applications? :)
Just save your default prefix (if all your games is there), easy way to do it - rename it. And with the home/username/.wine - default prefix, when Wine will be reinstalled, just replace your home/username/.wine with that saved (remove the new one default prefix and rename old one to its usual name).
No matter which version of Wine you'll have after (in usr/bin(libs) directories), it doesn't affect on prefixes.

Maybe your problem is not with Wine, but with the video driver or with X configuration. Just a guess...

Thanks! Seems so obvious now, but could have saved me a lot of time in the past! haha.

The games still aren't running though :(

Yeah, I think it's that or Wine not having the correct path to the opengl libs (might be different on LXDE). What's strange though is that other 3d accelerated games on emulators like dolphin and mupen64plus work fine...

You could give this a read just in case it is a problem with the libraries being incorrectly located http://www.wiredrevolution.com/system-a ... brary_path , but I would be willing to bet that the issue is that you are using the xorg-edgers ppa. That ppa is frequently unstable.
