I'm a beta tester for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala and I was wondering if you have a beta package of wine for 9.10? If not is there any alternatives to get the package installed before I make a move in putting it on the OS?

Why don't you compile Wine yourself? Howto is available on wiki.

I would compile IF there would be a 9.10 Karmic Koala APT repository.

As much as I love compiling code it would be great for some superstar to create a pre packaged wine repo for Karmic.

9.10 is released in a few weeks, is a new wine repo in plan already?

Probably, but the person to ask for a definitive answer is your distro's package maintainer.

Have you tried installing the Jaunty package instead? There's a decent chance that it'd actually work, unless some dependencies were moved/renamed in the Karmic repository...

Just a little update here- the Ubuntu Software Center (and I'm guessing by extension the Add/Remove program which has been placed in the Administration panel for now) actually has a package for Wine called Wine Windows Compatibility Layer (Beta Release) which is marked to 1.1.30 currently.

It says in the description that it may have decreased functionality since it's not the stable version, but they're including it by default now! :D Interesting to see that we have an officially updated Beta Release in the package manager, now. Lots of great improvements with this release so far, and this is only the Beta.

if you are testing a distro (9.10), you probably should know how to find such basic stuff, don't you ?

For all bleeding hedge packages, launchpad has a huge collection of ppa where you can find the latest unofficial & experimental project.

Wine is packaged & maintained by scott richie himself.

https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wine/+archive/ppa

add these lines in your sources.list, signed & upgrade:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-wine/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-wine/ppa/ubuntu karmic main

i installed wine using the auto installer tool.... and i compiled it using 9,04... then updated to 9.10 and no problems, my games run faster in 9.10 than 9.04... like for example:

World of Warcraft: I wasnt able to run it with wine using directx in 9.04 since fps were TOO low and it crashed, now in 9.10 i can play like if it was under a windows OS.

Cant wait till both do releases :3
