Trying to install Vmware View Agent 4.6 on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Post by goolong »

If you search the net, someone supposedly did this through wine on Redhat. When i tried to install i would instantly get a please reboot message. I tried wineboot, wineserver -k. I must have done a rm -rf ~/.wine a bunch when winetricks was getting checksum errors on the files. Also i checked the registry to make sure certain keys were not there. Looking in the installation log, there might be some msi error. Been trying all day, usine the latest Beta and using winetricks to install a bunch of packages but even that is erroring out. Anyone have any luck getting this to work? The vmware view agent can be download by anyone that registers with vmware and getting the trial or if need be, i can upload it to a megaupload or something. Been trying to get a proof of concept working, and be willing to buy a beer to someone for the help.

goolong you are about to kick you self and hate vmware in one hit.

http://code.google.com/p/vmware-view-open-client/ The Vmware Linux and OS X client for View.

Even that vmware does 90 percent of the development on it they don't officially support it. Yet most thinclients with Vmware View support are running this.

But there is no vmware view agent for Linux. Running inside wine is not going to work proper because Wine does not manage X11 applications. So you end up using xrdp hack what in it self is not perfectly stable.

Really getting head around redhat solution can be better for Linux forwarding. http://spice-space.org/ or opennx.net and related techs.

Basically you cannot built on quicksand. xrdp is quicksand goolong.

yeah, i installed xrdp to get port 3889 open. Was really hoping i could get the View Agent to work under wine so i can have a single solution and from a management standpoint for all our users. I have been trying to troubleshoot the installation from a windows standpoint by looking at the log files as it installs and how it looks for certain .net . the installer then tries to install it when it does not see it. I believe its due to needing the .net 3.5 sp1 but i am having trouble installing that even after installing the regular .net 3.5 from winetricks.
