Would LOVE to know how you did it :) .. or if u could even upload your game files somewhere. think we are on the same specs.

If OpenGL is running for you, could you please upload your Ogre.log somewhere? I have only Direct3d working here (also IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad with Intel GPU), and I've got rendering bugs, too (which I can get rid of by setting VSYNCH:1 - at least), and an awful framerate (i.e. below 5).

If I try to switch to OpenGL, the Ogre library complains about being unable to compile some of its CG programs:

04:37:12: OGRE EXCEPTION(7:InternalErrorException): Unable to compile Cg program Ogre/HardwareSkinningShadowCasterCg: CG ERROR : The compile returned an error.

in CgProgram::loadFromSource at C:\svn\Projects\ogre161\PlugIns\CgProgramManager\src\OgreCgProgramManagerDll.cpp (line 66)

and Torchlight doesn't even come up. Maybe this is a library compatibility issue, so it would be great if I could have a look at an Ogre.log from a working OpenGL setup, even more so if there's an Intel chipset underneath.

well I didn't really know what I was doing but I tried updating mesa gl or something like that. I know that probably has nothing to do with d3d but after that it worked instantly.

as far as open gl in the terminal I get to where it says loading ogre or whatever then I get an error and it crashes. d3d seems slow though but this computer isn't that fast anyway

il see if i can get a megaupload link for my ogre.log and post it here. If you would like i can email it to you.

That looks like a display driver issue. Make sure you use recent display drivers. At the moment Nvidia is the best choice, AMD is also getting better and on the open source side most drivers are still slow, buggy and don't implement recent 3D stuff.

lgtspecb, you are my hero :o

I followed your instructions and everthing works fine :D
Now I can run Torchlight in Opengl with good performance.

I wanted to say that the full and correct path to the settings.txt file is:
/home/dong/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/<username>/Application Data/runic games/torchlight
At least on my system :)

Now I can enjoy this fantastic game.

Well okay, I have to set up the settings in the settings.txt cause trying to open the settings menu ingame leads to a crash. But thats okay.

The thing that troubles me more is integrating this game into the desktop-environment. I can not minimize the game or tab away without getting into a "torchlight.exe not responding" situation. If someone has some hints on that I would appreciate any help or directions.

Thanks

I do not know about this specific program. But keep in mind that there are
many applications which have trouble with task switching (alt+tab) even
running under a real Windows.

There are two general solutions:

1- First, see if the game can run windowed. Then, if the title bar bothers
you, you can reposition it(either manually or with a tool).
2- If that fails, you can run it inside a Wine Desktop. That way the
application never knows that it has lost focus.

Thanks for the guide lgtspecb, I certainly never would have gotten Torchlight going without it. In case anyone else has the same problems as I experienced here is what I did differently from your guide:

In Step 4 I just did 'sh ./winetricks vcrun2008'. For some reason including 'dcom98' screwed up everything and I couldn't run any wine programs afterward (had to regenerate my .wine dir).

I was installing the Torchlight demo via Steam (I assume this applies to the full version as well), you have make sure after you've downloaded it to exit Steam (including the tray app). Otherwise when you try to run the game in safemode it won't work since Steam is already running not in safemode. Maybe this is obvious to others but it took me a bit.

The demo runs well for me. It gets a little laggy sometimes but maybe I can play with the detail settings a bit. Annoyingly trying to enter the settings menu in-game causes Torchlight to crash but I can manually edit settings.txt.

10) Edit plugins_opengl.cfm

Comment the line Plugin=RenderSystem_Direct3D9

Uncomment the line #Plugin=RenderSystem_GL
What do you mean by comment/uncomment? I can't find any information that makes sense. I obviously need to do this part cuz if I don't do it, the game runs but I don't get any graphics at all. Just a black window with sound. (if I mouse over the window I get the in game cursor)

Stephen, thanks for your post.

I followed your advice running Torchlight inside a Wine-Desktop.

I think it worked. I could start the game and when I pressed my "show desktop" keybinding the image of the torchlight-menu did freeze. After waiting quite a long time I was back on my desktop. Bringing Torchlight back up on the desktop worked instantly and I could continue to play. I tried this again a second time directly after the first try and the image did freeze again but I waited for I guess something like 2 minutes without my desktop showing up. A switched to tty1 and killed the Torchlight.exe process.
So I guess it basically works, but I just have lowbird hardware getting too busy handling the torchlight and compiz rendering at once.

About your other advice: I don't really get what you mean. I don't like playing in window-mode. Kills the atmosphere of a game in my opinion. I know you can deactivate the window decoration so it just looks like fullscreen if the game runs in the same resolution as the desktop. But I tried this directly after installing torchlight and remember that sometimes the window was shifted so that you could see part of the game and part of the desktop. Was the window decoration removal thing with winecfg what you meant?

Anyway I will give the window-mode a try and remove the window decoration and see what I get.

I will report back about my experience.

Allright I did a first test.

The result was that running the game in window-mode intergrates it very well into the desktop-environment. You can alt-tab away from the game and back to it, minimize it and all that stuff.

But there are two problems:
1. The game was running with the setting Fullscreen = 0 and I removed the window-decoration with winecfg but the game did render some windows like window-decoration instead.

2. The gnome-panels! I tried creating a window rule in compiz to set a window with "title=Torchlight" to fullscreen but the game did not react to this at all. Strange enough firefox instead, when showing this thread, did react to the window rule. So the window rule was correct but Torchlight just seems to ignor it.

I am out of ideas for this. If I could find a way to run the game in window-mode while hiding every window-decoration and also hiding the panels as long as torchlight is the active window I would be fine :)

If someone out there knows how to make this happen, let me know

I installed the 1.12 patch http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic. ... 576#p24576 and now the game won't start, it crashes with a naughty:

it runs fine for me visually. Need to use D3d as with OpenGL the game won't even start. What annoys the heck out of me though is stuttering sound. Using Ubuntu 9.10 and Wine 1.1.32. Anyone know what to do?

Before everybody starts telling you to remove Pulseaudio I'll advise you to google a bit about it: "Pulseaudio" and "Ubuntu Pulseaudio" should help you understand what Pulse is all about. In the meantime, you can try to fix your Pulseaudio configuration, to remove things such as stuttering sound, using: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578

I always follow that guide. Make sure that you only have ALSA selected in winecfg and don't forget to really google about Pulseaudio. I personally have never had to remove it in any of my 5 installs over here, but I always do everything I need from the guide I pointed you to. If that fails, then proceed with Pulseaudio's removal, that's not my "area of expertise".

Torchlight

Post by Yama »

I had originally had much of the same lag and various problems as other users, but after completely wiping my .wine directory and removing and reinstalling the wine and winetricks debs, I managed to get TL running on my box.

I used winetricks to grab Directx9 and vc2008, and the game runs wonderfully, probably better than my brothers newer laptop using Vista.

Even with all graphics options on maximum (except AA and HW skinning which I leave off) I'm still running 40fps average *woot*

Now however, the game will randomly freeze (sometimes on level change or portaling) and won't let me do anything, even alt+tab or drop to wine desktop. I have to drop to tty1 and kill wine, or sometimes hard reboot. This perplexes me, and as a new wine user, I am unaware of where to look for wine logs (I guess I could use debug mode until it crashes to get a mem dump?) Laptop is *not* overheated, either.

My box

I am using Ubuntu 9.04, some of my sources are 8.10 sources so I can use proprietary drivers for my legacy radeon, as the Xorg drivers REALLY don't like my X700 mobility

Turion x64 (original single-core) 2.4
Ati Radeon mobility x700 with proprietary drivers.
Wine 1.1.33 and gecko 1.0
2 gigs DDR crucial (No problems with them)
Audigy 2 ZS Notebook PCMCIA with ALSA drivers (sound works fine in wine)

All packages are *always* kept up to date, and Wine directory is clean.
I am running Torchlight in Direct3d mode. TL is bought and downloaded from GamersGate.

Here is a dump of the OGRE log at or shortly before the moment of crash, I can usually play for 20 to 60 minutes before crash.

Torchligt not runs

Post by mede »

I don't get Torchlight to run on my ubuntu

Ubuntu 9.10
wine 1.1.35
Torchlight 1.12 from gamersgate.com

i dryed all the tricks i found in the different forums but there are several problems:

"wine Torchlight.exe SAVEMODE=1" crashes with a unhandled page fault, so i dont get the settings.cfg. And the savemode.zip which is referred in different threads isent on the server anymore.

Code: Select all

mede@medeslapii:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Runic Games/Torchlight$ wine Torchlight.exe SAVEMODE=1
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x0000c320 at address 0x0000:0x0000c320 (thread 0009), starting debugger..
someone could solve a similar problem ?

Strange, it works out-of-the-box here with no tricks or whatever.
Can you give the full console output?

Can you test with Wine 1.1.35, Wine 1.0.1 is quite old!
Maybe it runs here because my Wine version is newer...
