Starcraft - Gives me no visual output
Starcraft - Gives me no visual output
starcraft is a game ive enjoyed for a long time and last time i played it was on windows. now im trying it on ubuntu feisty, with wine installed. starcraft installed amazingly fast, but when i started it up, its as if the computer was giving no visual output, and the monitor itself gave me an error message. basicly i could still hear the starcraft music in the background, but i couldnt see a thing. the only way to get out of this was to restart my computer manually :/
is there a way to fix this graphics problem?

It might be helpful if you provided more system hardware info. What
graphics chip/driver are you using? Any other info you want to provide
would be welcomed.

Is it possible that your monitor does not support the resolution
Starctaft is trying to set itself at? I know it is an older game, and is
probably either 640x480 or 800x600 by default. Can you trying having the
game run in a window and see if it starts for you?

yeah i got my friend to run it in a separate window and it works properly, but the window is damn small and i cant get it bigger, and it just wont work full screen, no clue why.
could it be that i didnt install my graphics card or something? cuz all i did was install ubuntu from the CD and then i just started using it, i didnt do any installing of anything..
but if thats the case, then it shouldnt work in a separate window either, should it?
and i know my hardware can handle it cuz i ran it using windows lol
my friend said that my integrated graphics card ( yes i know, SHAT! but i wanna upgrade, no $$ ) might be the source of the problem?

Re: Starcraft - Gives me no visual output
Run 'xrandr' in the terminal and check if you have any 800x600 modes listed. If you don't then you need to configure your video card. Refer to your disrto's support for that (each has their own way to do it).pogoyoyo wrote:yeah i got my friend to run it in a separate window and it works properly, but the window is damn small and i cant get it bigger, and it just wont work full screen, no clue why.

OK, I got around to testing this problem this morning. I had
exactly the same issue when I started. StartCraft installed correctly
but when I started it I got sound and no video. The problem, in my
case, wasn't Wine but rather my X configuration. Once I fixed that
StarCraft worked perfectly on Wine-0.9.57.
In my case I am using a Samsung SyncMaster 172s. My xorg.conf file
had 'reasonable' values for horizontal and vertical sync, but not the
'exact' right values. I was 'close', but not perfect, at least
according to my monitor's manual.
I changed my xorg.conf file to use the exact values in the manual
and restarted X. StarCraft then started and ran perfectly.
I do not think there is any problem with Wine-0.9.57 runing StarCraft.
