"Star Wars: Empire at War": Disc is not being detected

Post by mdw2 »

Hi everyone,
I had a problem with the game "Star Wars: Empire at War" last year already but luckily i got that fixed thanks to Bob Wya. Here's the post I made regarding that in case it could be relevant to my current issue:
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=29033
I am using the Gold Pack edition that contains both the Empire at War basegame aswell as the Forces of Corruption expansion on disc.
But now recently there has apparently been an update for the game some time ago. i have tried several ways to launch the game, including launching the original EaW game, launching the FoC expansion, launching the game's ModLauncher and launching the Gold Pack's Launcher.
Either the error message says that the disc is not inserted or that the patch 1.05 must be installed. The patch filed, as downloaded from https://www.gamefront.com/games/empire- ... h#Download or taken directly from the disc doesn't work either because it doesn't find the game and that I should install the game from the original CD-ROM and try again.
Also, when I try to install the game in a new folder from the setup.exe from the disc, I get this error message:

Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x000000fc in 32-bit code (0x0041e48b).

If anyone has an idea on how I can make the game detect the disc, please tell me.
Until then, have a good time!

@mdw2

Backtraces on their own are rarely useful for debugging.

Please can you post the full terminal log and the command used to launch the game installer / update patch installer (or whatever you're trying to run)...

Your post is really garbled...
  • What is the backtrace from?
  • A re-installation of the game, an update patch, or what?
  • Are you using a clean WINEPREFIX? If not - then you should be!
As in the previous thread, I'd recommend to set Windows XP compatibility for the WINEPREFIX:

Code: Select all

winetricks -q winxp
Please use the supplied forum Code tags to delimit terminal output and commands:

Code: Select all

I AM CODE
(highlight the block and press the Code button above the forum edit box).

Thanks
Bob

First of, thank you for offering your help once again.
To clarify, when I executed the setup.exe file (copied from the disc) for the first time successfully, the folders drive_c and dosdevices, ~, and the files system.reg, user.reg, userdef.reg, winetricks.log and .update-timestamp were created. Following the path /drive_c/Program Files/LucasArts/Star Wars Empire at War Forces of Corruption i found the executables LaunchEAWX.exe, swfoc.exe, and sweaw.exe.
While sweaw.exe and swfoc.exe are launchers for their respective games, the basegame and the expansion, LaunchEAWX.exe is the launcher to the gold pack, opening a menu that lets you select one of the two.
However, when I try to use setup.exe now, the folder LucasArts is not created, and with it none of the launchers.
In the console, the following happens:

and also two different error messages, one after the other.
First this:
ERROR 41:
"Star Wars: Empire at War" language files not found!
Please select a different language before starting a game OR make sure you have all the following files instead:
-"\GameDate\Data\Speech.meg"
-"\GameDate\Data\Audio\SFX\SF2D_.meg"
-"\GameDate\Data\Text\CreditsText_.dat"
-"\GameDate\Data\Text\MasterTextFile_.dat"
(I have all those files)
Then this:
An update for "Star Wars: Empire at War" is available.
Do you want to download the patch version 1.05 now?
This has the options YES and No. When i click on YES, a browser window opens on
https://www.gamefront.com/games/empire- ... h#Download
, from where I can download the patch, more on that later.
Then the ModLauncher opens. Now I have 3 options: play EAW, play FOC, or play any of the mods I had previously installed.
Both of EAW and FOC have 2 error messages, playing a mod 3. The 2 I get from the games are the same as when I first started the ModLauncher. Clicking PLAY MOD (with one selected of course) This opens:

[Securom::603]

Please, do NOT click "Cancel" until you are done playing "Star Wars: Empire at War: Forces of Corruption" or click it if you do not want to start the game at all.

If you keep getting this error message when you are already done playing, the wrong Securom version may have been detected. Try staarting this ModLauncher with Securom="false" as parameter. See Info page.

Clicking RETRY only opens the same window again, clicking CANCEL opens the other 2 windows and once I have clicked CANCEL and NO on them, the ModLauncher comes back.
Coming back to the update file, this is what happens when I execute it in drve_c:

000b:fixme:winediag:start_process Wine Staging 3.6 is a testing version containing experimental patches.
000b:fixme:winediag:start_process Please mention your exact version when filing bug reports on winehq.org.
0009:fixme:exec:SHELL_execute flags ignored: 0x00000100

Also another error message poppes up that says (translated from german by me):
Star Wars Empire At War has not been found.
Please install the gamefrom the original CD-ROM again and try again.

So, about your questions.
I am using a WINEPREFIX set to the folder I installed the game in using setup.exe
(export WINEPREFIX="/home//SW_EAW_FOC")
with
export WINEARCH=win32
since the game doesnt run at all otherwise. After that I just use "wine start" to start the program.
I had never tried that winetricks line (winetricks wasnt even installed).
I am sorry but for some reason I cant find the CODE button you're talking about (I'm not to familiar with this website, as you can tell by my 1/2 star).

So, I hope this probably way to long and precise answer is helpful in any way.
I'm sorry for the garbled post, but I just didnt know what to put in there since it was just so much.
And with that, I hope you can make anything from this and
Goodbye,
Marvin

@mdw2,

Please can you split up your posts. One issue per post! It's just overloading my brain.
Especially not having any text formatting your posts...

Please post all the terminal commands you are using and your working path for these commands (i.e. the directory you are in, in your terminal, when you run them)...

The working paths for game binaries are not always obvious. I usually extract the path information from the Windows .lnk files (put in the Windows Start menu).
E.g. for my Fear Demo WINEPREFIX:

Code: Select all

find "${WINEPREFIX:-${HOME}/.wine}/drive_c/ProgramData/Microsoft/Windows/Start Menu/Programs/" -type f -name "*.lnk" -print0 | xargs -0 strings | egrep 'C:\\.*\.exe'
C:\Program Files\Sierra\FEAR MP Demo\FEARMPDemo.exe
C:\Program Files\Sierra\FEAR MP Demo\FEARServer.exe
C:\Program Files\Sierra\FEAR MP Demo\config.exe
(Find binary lnk files, extract string data, match on an absolute executable path.)
Then I know I can safely start the Fear Demo with:

Code: Select all

wine start 'C:\Program Files\Sierra\FEAR MP Demo\FEARMPDemo.exe'
Without worrying about what directory I launch this command in (just need the env variable WINEPREFIX to be set correctly).

It's best to fix all missing native (Linux) dependencies - if Wine is attempting to load them... As in:

Code: Select all

0010:err:winediag:SECUR32_initNTLMSP ntlm_auth was not found or is outdated. Make sure that ntlm_auth >= 3.0.25 is in your path. Usually, you can find it in the winbind package of your distribution.
Although I doubt your game will require SMB/CIFS networking support... But who am I to say??

First log:

Code: Select all

wine: configuration in '/home/marvin/EaW_1.05_2' has been updated.
Then later:
I am using a WINEPREFIX set to the folder I installed the game in using setup.exe

Code: Select all

export WINEPREFIX="/home//SW_EAW_FOC"
export WINEARCH=win32
Are you accidentally using 2 different WINEPREFIX's:
  • /home/marvin/SW_EAW_FOC
  • /home/marvin/EaW_1.05_2
??

I tested everything in 2 different folders so the different wineprefixes must have been me copying different commands out of the history. :? I did use only one wineprefix for the commands.
I can post all the different issues in seperate posts later this day (i cant get on my PC at the moment).
As for everything you suggested I do, will also try that later but I doubt it will change much about the overall outcome. About SMB/CIFS connections, I never needed anything like that last year, it always worked without that.
Until sometime later this day,

Next, the games (to my knowledge unofficial) ModLauncher:

Code: Select all

cd EmpireAtWarModLauncher_v1.1.0/

Code: Select all

wine start EaWModLauncher.exe
Result:

Code: Select all

000b:fixme:winediag:start_process Wine Staging 3.6 is a testing version containing experimental patches.
000b:fixme:winediag:start_process Please mention your exact version when filing bug reports on winehq.org.
0009:fixme:exec:SHELL_execute flags ignored: 0x00000100
This is actually all that happens in the shell when I use the command.
2 error messages pop up:
ERROR 41:
"Star Wars: Empire at War" language files not found!
Please select a different language before starting a game OR make sure you have all the following files instead:
-"\GameDate\Data\Speech.meg"
-"\GameDate\Data\Audio\SFX\SF2D_.meg"
-"\GameDate\Data\Text\CreditsText_.dat"
-"\GameDate\Data\Text\MasterTextFile_.dat"
I had never seen that error before. I also went on to copy and remane the existing speech and audio files from that folder (they had slightly different names before) but this error still came.
Then:
An update for "Star Wars: Empire at War" is available.
On this one I get the options Yes and No.
Yes opens a link to https://www.gamefront.com/games/empire- ... h#Download, from where you can download the update file.
No closes the window and opens the ModLauncher.
In the menu, I have the options of PLAY EAW, PLAY FOC and PLAY MOD (with one selected)

Clicking the 1. option, this happens in the console:

Code: Select all

0030:err:module:import_dll Library binkw32.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\Star Wars Empire at War Forces of Corruption\\EmpireAtWarModLauncher_v1.1.0\\sweaw.exe") not found
0030:err:module:import_dll Library PerceptionFunctionG.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\Star Wars Empire at War Forces of Corruption\\EmpireAtWarModLauncher_v1.1.0\\sweaw.exe") not found
0030:err:module:import_dll Library mss32.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\Star Wars Empire at War Forces of Corruption\\EmpireAtWarModLauncher_v1.1.0\\sweaw.exe") not found
0030:err:module:attach_dlls Importing dlls for L"C:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\Star Wars Empire at War Forces of Corruption\\EmpireAtWarModLauncher_v1.1.0\\sweaw.exe" failed, status c0000135
and both of the error messages open again, then the ModLaunchers menu.

Clicking the second option, the exact same thing happens, with only slightly different error text in the console.

Code: Select all

0034:err:module:import_dll Library binkw32.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\Star Wars Empire at War Forces of Corruption\\EmpireAtWarModLauncher_v1.1.0\\swfoc.exe") not found
0034:err:module:import_dll Library PerceptionFunctionG.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\Star Wars Empire at War Forces of Corruption\\EmpireAtWarModLauncher_v1.1.0\\swfoc.exe") not found
0034:err:module:import_dll Library mss32.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\Star Wars Empire at War Forces of Corruption\\EmpireAtWarModLauncher_v1.1.0\\swfoc.exe") not found
0034:err:module:attach_dlls Importing dlls for L"C:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\Star Wars Empire at War Forces of Corruption\\EmpireAtWarModLauncher_v1.1.0\\swfoc.exe" failed, status c0000135
Selecting the third option on the other hand opens a window saying:
[Securom::603]

Also again the same thing happens in the console and once I click cancel on that error window, the other two return and after that the menu.

Second to last, the update file from said browser link.
(back one folder above out of the ModLaunchers folder)

Code: Select all

wine start eawupdate1_5.exe
this is everthing that happens in the console:

Code: Select all

0009:fixme:exec:SHELL_execute flags ignored: 0x00000100
/code]

Error window:
Star Wars Empire At War has not been found.

Please install the game from the original CD-ROM again and try again.
Lastly, this is what happens if I try do do a completely new installation using the setup.exe from the disc:

Code: Select all

mkdir EAW_2
cd EAW_2
cp /media/marvin/EAWX_1/setup.exe .
export WINEPREFIX="/home/marvin/EAW_2"
export WINEARCH=win32
wine start setup.exe
This happens in the console:

and an error message from my PC telling me

(I used a translator to get that into english)
I also get a backtrace but i doubt that you need to see that.

As for the folder itself, drive_c is created but only has these contents:
Common Files, Internet Explorer, Windoes Media Player and Windows NT
this has the folders InstallShield Installation Information and LucasArts (which contains the game files) missing.

For now, I really hope you can make anything of all this.
Bye,

No wonder you're having problems - this is totally wrong!

What you want is something like:

Code: Select all

export WINEPREFIX="/home/marvin/EAW_2"
export WINEARCH=win32
# Let Wine create the final root directory of the WINEPREFIX itself:
wineboot -u
# Start the installer from the mounted optical disc / iso file:
wine start 'D:\setup.exe'
You can find all the DOS / Windows drive letter mappings for a WINEPREFIX with:
  • Code: Select all

    find "${WINEPREFIX:-${HOME}/.wine}/dosdevices" -type l -name "?\:" -print | xargs -I {} sh -c 'dir={};dir="${dir^^}";printf "${dir/*\//} "; readlink -f "{}"'
  • or just by looking at the winecfg / Drives tab
  • or by manually poking about in the directory:

    Code: Select all

    cd "${WINEPREFIX:-${HOME}/.wine}/dosdevices"
    ls -hl
Replace D:\setup.exe (above) as necessary above with the drive letter mapped to:

Code: Select all

/media/marvin/EAWX_1/

Thanks for the help Bob,
but I still have issues with the installer. Though finally the actual installer started, i got this.

Translated to english, it means:
[EAW] not found.
You have to install [EAW], before you can install [FOC].
I just cut the full game titles to EAW and FOC.

Lets stick to one problem at a time (i.e. installing EAW)! 8)
  • Can you provide a listing of all the root files on the CD/DVD? Please just dump that inline with Code tags.
    (Long shot.)
  • Can you also provide the terminal log from running setup.exe as well.
Please also give the terminal PWD (working directory) and command used to launch: setup.exe
Update: forgot to mention your CD might be protected with SecuROM 7.00.00.0129.
So you'd be in a catch-22 situation - unable to install the patch 1.05 - which I believe removes this protection (??)
You can scan the disc with: Protection ID to check.
If you do this - please post the scan output here (Protection ID will run under Wine)...

About that Protection ID stuff, I'lll look into that now, might take a while for me to fully understand it.

That is the SecuROM protected executable. Confirming my suspicions...

There are ways to workaround this...
Just Google for some Windows discussion threads on this (SecuROM) matter.
They just can't be discussed on this forum (because they aren't illegal)!

I found and followed this guide:
http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/micros ... mes,3.html
I executed the start of sc

Code: Select all

wine start sc.exe start secdrv
in

Code: Select all

~/EAW_2/drive_c/windows/system32
which didn't help. Then I started regedit and added the secdrv variable as DWORD with the value 2. This didn't help either.
