WINE apps don't see hidden folders

Post by paul1149 »

I've seen this asked a couple of times here in the past, with no answer that works. An example:
I'm trying to mod System Shock 2. The program that mods it requires that the user find the folder where SS2 is installed, but the file browser in the program can't access hidden folders, so it can't see where the game is installed under .wine. In Wine settings, I've already checked "show dot folders." Is there any way to force the program to see hidden folders?
This states my problem exactly. None of the apps running under WINE see hidden folders under Linux. I'm running WINE-devel 2.4 on ubuntu 16.4 x64. Wine-gecko is 2.21, and the winecfg/about box says 1.62. I have "Show DOT files" checked, and I've rebooted.

1.6.2 is over 3 years old and no longer supported. The current stable release is 2.0.1 and the current development and staging releases are 2.11.

Thanks. I wondered about that version seeming to be old. I have the repository set:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/wine/wine-builds/ubuntu

Yet, I don't see any listing for winecfg in Synaptic:

That repository is no longer used. The current one is https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/. https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu

As for winecfg, that's part of Wine; you won't see a separate package for it.

OK, thanks. I uninstalled everything, then set the new repository and release key via the terminal. But then this:

Code: Select all

paul@Precision:~$ sudo apt-add-repository https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/
paul@Precision:~$ sudo apt-get install --install-recommends winehq-devel
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package winehq-devel
paul@Precision:~$
And in Synaptic, the latest WINE showing is v 1.9x

Here you go:

So the repository is enabled OK.

What's the full output from:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
??

There may be a CDN issue - affecting your ability to get hold of the wine packages automatically.

Of course you can manually install the required .deb archives (from the WineHQ Repository) - using dpkg.
But that's not really recommended - you'd have to select the right group of archives to install.

Looks like it was a temporary glitch. I ran the command again and 2.11 installed, apparently correctly. I'll check things out and get back.

Everything looks fine, except the original problem persists. I'm trying to use SQLiteSpy to edit a database file, and its Open dialog won't show hidden "dot" folders, though "Show Dot folders" is checked in winecfg (which is now v. 2.11, btw)

@paul1149,

Have you thought that this may actually be a limitation with the Windows software you are testing?
You'd have to test whether the application exhibits the same behaviour with .directories when using native Windows...

Certainly the "Show Dot folders" Wine registry key works with:

Code: Select all

wine explorer
- showing both hidden Linux .files and .directories.

For some reason WINE no longer has an Accessories listing in the XFCE menu. I checked menu configuration and it's not available either.

I just checked some other .exe portables though - metapad, slimjet (a chromium derivative whose installed Linux version does see dot files), and all I get is the open dialog with no way to see dot files or change any such setting.

The WineHQ Wine packages don't include Ubuntu's desktop integration files for Wine.
These files are available to download @ ~ubuntu-wine/wine/ubuntu-debian-dir ...
I'm not aware of any .deb packages for a bundle of these "desktop integration" files - without any other files.

I can't reproduce your issues accessing .directories and opening .files.

With metapad if I select:
Files of type: All Files (*.*) (Open menu command)
Then I can browse .directories and open .files.

Thanks for checking. I really don't miss the windows notepad or IE; was just saying that I can't use them to test this.

I'm going to link to a shot of metapad's (portable; not sure if installation matters) Open dialog set to my /home/paul folder, showing no dot folders, and the Dot folder setting enabled in winecfg.

Ok, I tried another database portable utility, same result. Then I installed PSPad. There I found the same problem with the Open dialog, but the Tree pane did show the dot folders under my Home directory.

I downloaded SQLiteSpy. It is possible to see hidden directories & files, but the way to do it is not obvious:

Select File->Open Database.
In the "Look in" dropdown box, select My Computer.
Select the Z: drive.
Browse to your home directory (or wherever you have the hidden directories/files you want to access). The hidden directories/files should be visible.

Wine's notepad file open dialog has the same problem.

And there's already a bug for it: https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32079.

Excellent. It is as you say, and I can work with that. Thank you for finding that and for reporting it to the bug.

And thanks very much to both of you for your great efforts to resolve this problem.

Blessings.
