DOOM 2016

Post by JoaoSoeiro »

Hi,

I have installed DOOM with PoL and it is running smoothly with Vulkan on. I mean, 80 fps minimum. It is like a dream come true :D

However I just noticed that I have a hardware freeze randomly between 5 to 30 minutes. I can't do anything after and the only output I have is the game sound that continues playing normally. I googled a lot and found no answer yet.

Any tips?

Please run in a terminal and post output (if it's not too long). I don't know how to get the console output in PoL, but it should be possible to make PoL store it in a log file.

PoL isn't really supported here, maybe you could run with latest vanilla wine (or staging) without PoL. I'm not sure, if the virtual drive stuff somehow might be an issue, could you try without? Do you have some 'special' setup like multi-monitor-configuration?

If all else fails, file a bug.

  • Are you launching Doom from Steam?
  • What physically happens in your Wine Virtual Desktop? What happens to the game window? Is it still visible?
  • Is a screenshot possible? with Vulkan?

Hi

Yes I'm launching Doom from Steam
Everything freezes. It stays with the last image playing the game until I reboot the machine.
When it happens I'm not able to do anything. It is like a hardware crash.

I will add a journalctl --since=today on main post.

Thanks!

It seems I'm not able to edit my post.

This is my journalctl --since=today after the crash.

Hi

The PoL log file is the last part of my post. If there is other file I can post here from PoL please tell me.

I will try run without PoL.

I have two monitors yes. Do you need any info about that from my machine?

@JoaoSoeiro,

I thought this issue was along the lines of "game has frozen". I don't see you mentioning a locked system in your first post...
But now you're saying it's probably a hard graphics driver crash. Which immediately sounds like a bug in Nvidia's (very) beta Vulkan driver.

What's the timing of the systemd-coredump - your system appears a bit unstable... If system is dumping core then things are going badly wrong somewhere...

Then do some comparision tests (e.g. CMST on / off), etc. Might help pin down the offending subsystem (if it's in Wine).
Or just keep testing with newer Nvidia Vulkan drivers - as they are released - to see if stability improves.

Personally I haven't bothered to try Doom with Vulkan - because I suspect it's not nearly ready for prime-time usage.
But I'm glad there are people like you - willing to go through the heartache / hard system crashes... 8)
