THIEF 2014 in wine

Post by chris33556 »

so i recently tried to install thief 2014 in wine and got it to run as far as the title screen. Ingameplay lags terribly but shows the game works in wine. Any chance of patches to fix the regress? furthermore if not, how do i go about applying patches myself is there a tutorial?

No one's filed any bugs for this game, and neither of the test reports in the AppDB say anything about performance issues, though both mention a problem with the menus that AFAICT also hasn't been reported in bugzilla.

You didn't mention what Wine version you're using. If it's not the latest development release, upgrade. If the problem is still present, file a bug. If you really believe this is a regression, you should also run a regression test to identify the patch that caused it. https://wiki.winehq.org/Regression_Testing

yeah sorry about that. I realised after my original post i should have included more details:

so basically I used playonlinux with steam install with:

- wine version 1.9.24 64bit
-compatibility mode windows 7
-set windows size to 1080x768
-selected vertual destop and allowed wine to decorate windows etc
-install direct x 9, 10 ,11 drivers
-dotnet 4.0 ( i think i installed this from the actuall file in the games folder)
-vcrun 2010 and 2008

Trying to run the game with 2.0 + wine staging or the latest for that matter grphically corrupts the main menu i.e polygonal artifacts keep splashing on the screen. so I had to revert to the standard wine versions.

during gameplay the frame rate is very slow and choppy, its literally unplayable, but there is no graphical corruptions or artifacts during gameplay on the screen.
the only thing this game needs is to improve frame rates.

i hope thats given you more info. ill try to make video of a sample of my progress.

I am the author of the AppDB entries for the game.

The only problem I have with the game is strange green textures on surfaces that pop when you get
closer. I benchmarked the game and got a max of 33 fps with an average of 19 fps. I get similar
performance with Hitman: Absolution.

The problem with the main menu has been fixed with 2.3(S). Wine version 1.9.24 is too old. You should
upgrade to 2.3.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I suddenly realised that there was a new version of wine and noticed the same improvements as you did. Thanks it's nice to know thief hasn't gone unnoticed in the wine community .
