Need help getting game to work with wine

Hi

I'm currently trying to get the game "Simple Planes" (PC version: http://www.simpleplanes.com/) running, wich can be bought on steam.
I successfully can install steam and I successfully got other games running using wine and/or playonlinux.
However, I'm failing with "simple planes".

Currently I'm able to:
- install steam
- install "simple planes" from my library

When I start the game, steam complains about beeing not able to sync my local files with the steamcloud. After clicking "cancel", the game obviously starts (is running) but the screen freezes before showing any game / menu graphics, still showing my my steam window.

Can someone help me to find out:
- what can I do to get the game running?
- where do I start - I have no idea even how to start fixing it or where to look

Here is what I know:
- game uses dotnet / unity
- afaik it requires "only" DX9

I'm running ubuntu 14.04 LTS (updated) and tried several wine-versions between 1.7 and 1.9
