[C&C: Red Alert] Unable to allocate primary video buffer

Post by Tersus »

Hello,

I get the message dialog "Error - Unable to allocate primary video buffer – aborting." when starting red alert.

I am using Arch Linux (x64) and have create a wine 32bit prefix.
I installed netframework 2.0sp2 and directx9 by winetricks.
I installed red alert portable as recommended but if I launch the game I get the above error dialog.
I use default settings.

I am on a Dell XPS 13 9350 with Intel Skylake.

I know its generally regarded not to do it but have you tried reinstalling directx9?
This has worked for me in the past
Plus also maybe it needs changing to win98 not xp?
Or even tried this patch..

No chance. The uninstall of directx doesn't change anything. :(
The Portable RA (see: http://iran.cnc-comm.com/ra/) has the patch 3.03 integrated.

In Win98 mode RA already stops in the terminal ...
In Win7 mode RA stops also with the error dialog.
