programs will not launch

Post by soysos »

I should probably admit I am new to linux. well that's not entirely true but the last time I messed with it there was no gui. anyway I dicided to give ubuntu a try, crashed my system in the process. anyway the problum I am having is this. programs install just fine, and I've tried installing in several different ways. just running the .exe file, going through play on linux, wine tricks. regardless of how I install the program or what the rating is in the database I can't run the program. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong I have followed every tutorial I can find and I get the same result. the icon popes up in the launcher flashes a few times then goes away. I shoul mention I'm running ubuntu 11.10 on a HP dv6t quad edition.

It's actually a good thing that you have used linux without the GUI
because that is by far the best way to debug the problems. What I mean
is try running the application from the shell and look at the debug
messages that wine spits out.

http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log

I suggest to get the log for 1 application if it is large post it on
pastbin.com and then start a new thread here for the application and
link to your debug log.

I can't even get them to launch from the command line. its like wine doesn't realize it has to do something. I really want to make linux work but the whole reason I bought this computer was to do more gaming.

PlayOnLinux is not supported here; they have their own forum. http://www.playonlinux.com/en/forums.html

Try again without play on linux. This forum is for plain wine.

Video card and driver version?

Looks like you either have to install the proprietary driver for your
video card or the 32 bit video driver extensions. This has been
discussed many times on the forum.

I actually have a switchable graphics configuration. an integrated intel, this one just shows up as HD graphics family, and an ATI Radeon HD 6490M. I have the driver for the ATI card but with as much truble as I'm having with the 3d fuctions I don't think its reading it.

Does Linux report that the ATI video card is working? Wine cannot and
does not have the ability to 'turn on' or 'turn off' graphics cards.
