Anyone else experiencing crashes when installing gecko in Ubuntu
feisty? Whenever I run wine and attempt to install gecko, I get a
consistent crash...

Have you tried using winetricks to install it? If I'm not mistaken, all it's doing to install it is extracting a cab file to a location on your wine's drive_c and then adds that location to the registry to point to it.

However, I have seen many apps crash directly after installing gecko. This has usually been because of the unimplemented BITS stuff for the apps I was using though.

I typically keep it in /usr/share/wine/gecko/, which allows for it to
be installed without downloading each time. When running wine from
/home/austin/wine-git/, however, it runs fine, since self compiled
wine isn't checking /usr/share/wine/gecko for wine gecko. Running
$ /home/austin/wine-git/wine iexplore.exe http://www.winehq.org
Also leads to a crash.

This doesn't happen on my gutsy machine though...

Everquest 1 and 2, (it happened on another but I cannot remember the name atm). Though they don't specifically need BITS to work, even installing gecko causes an immediate crash when it tries to load the patcher.

So "many" should probably be "several". I didn't mean for it to sound like it was a huge issue.

Yes, works fine on my gutsy machine, but fails on feisty. Trying to

If it works on the newer version than why bother with the older one? Clearly a problem of the older one was fixed in the newer one. Linux isn't like Windows, it gets better with each new version.

I'm very well of that, but considering that this A) should work in
feisty, and B) did up until a few weeks ago, there is a bug to be
fixed. Bugs shouldn't be swept under the rug, but instead fixed.
Otherwise, they may resurface later...
