Wine and OS X

Post by Xelinis »

My girlfriend is currently running Leopard and she wants to use a certain playstation game playing program. I set her up with a trial version of Crossover Office but it still has a few undesirable bugs. I'm an experienced Linux user with lots of knowledge of Wine's configuration options but not enough experience with Macs. Options?

Xelinis:

There is a more recent version of Wine, specifically built for OSX,
called Darwine. Mike Kronenberg has created additional functionality
for Leopard. You can Google for his web site and download his Darwine
builds for Intel based Macs and try the latest one to see if the problem
you encountered has been fixed. If it has not, please look at the
Applications Database to see if the program exists for workarounds
and/or bug reports. If the problem you are encountering is not fixed or
has a workaround, please check Bugzilla if as bug report exists. If no
report exists, please create one.

Thank you.

Yes, I am aware of Darwine but I've heard mixed opinions on how to get it up and running. Some say Fink, some say Macports, others say compile from source. However, at the same time, I've heard complaints about all of the above options, particularly with OpenGL support. I'm just wondering if there's anyone here who can clear this up.

OpenGL is horribly broken with Apple's X11. I recommend using a
'different' X11 version.

I use Fink and have installed many packages, but that is because a
different OpenSource project requires them.

Again, I recommend that you look at Mike Kronenberg's builds and see if
they will work for you.

Thank you for the detailed response but do you suppose you could elaborate a bit more on using a different X11? Like I said before, my experience with Macs is a bit limited.

You could install X11 from either Fink or Macports and then build
Darwine using them. I have no use at this time for OpenGL as none of
the programs I run uses it. I use Fink for my ported software and
additionally recommend visiting the Fink web site for more information.

Darwine is not available as a Fink package. Darwine is not really
compatible with Fink, as it messes with freetype-config, and that
screws up X11 for some Fink packages. I found this out the hard way:

No strange occurrances of freetype-config on my system and I build and
install Darwine. I'm wondering why this happened.

Not if you go to http://xquartz.macosforge.org/ and download the

I have the latest xquartz (2.1.4) and it has a dead lock and doesn't
work with wine.
Take a look at this: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10184
Regards.

Perhaps the issue was found and corrected in Darwine. It caused me
enough grief that I wasn't tempted to try it again, especially as I
found that simply installing wine using the Fink packaging system was
perfectly adequate to my needs.

Thank you for pointing out this bug and the resulting conversation. It
still appears that some work will be needed by a dedicated Mac developer
to fix this and make OpenGL work in the Mac OS X environment. Remember
that AJ does not like ObjC code and we should not need it to fix this.
