OpenGL patch applied, now AutoCAD 2005 can be installed even on a unpatched wine.
The registry problem remains, if you don't patch wine you'll have problems with add-ons like expresstools... but it's already usable.

autocad 2008 and wine

Post by dAnIK SeNT »

Hi everyone, especially miciomax :-)
Now that AutoCAD 2005 is working, I'm trying to install DWGgateway yet without
success. Installation starts and stops with page fault just a few seconds
later.
A while ago, miciomax wrote:

I'm sure that it'll open version 2256 files too in the future.
How did you manage to install it?

Ops, sorry, that was on winxp before going to autocad on linux... I didn't try dwggateway on linux. I'll do it on next days, maybe.
But, for now, you can just use 2008... it's crashing here and there, but to open/convert/save a drawing it can be used.
Or, there are some free alternatives.... maybe you can look at http://www.opendwg.com/files/guestdownl ... eryDWG.zip, it's still a windows app, but I guess it'll work on wine.
BTW, if that's not good for you, you can google for some "free dwg converter" or something like this, there's plenty of app around :-)

Autocad 2008 --> .net related problems

Post by JMS »

Hi Miciomax

First I would like to thank you for all your posts.

I've installed 2008 on 1.1.0 and it seems more stable than 1.0.

Bright side:
-It loads very fast, almost like in xp.
-Everything seems ok, I have loaded some 3d files 50MB each, and did 3dorbit with all the shading smoothly
-I can plot to my Designjet ;)

Dark side
TTF fonts painfully slow are still there.
.Net doesn't work, so you don't have layers dialog
Crashes when help tips appear, resolved by (tips wont appear)

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\AutoCAD\R17.1\ACAD-6001:409\Profiles\<<Unnamed Profile>>\Drawing Window]
"MoreHideWarningDialogs"=dword:00000200

There are some random crashes, ie when you are in 3dorbit and do right click to change the visual style or the customize option. (you can change the visual style via menu and it works fine)

Do you have .NET working on Ubuntu wine? It could be an especific problem of Darwine (I've tried with a simple .net app and it doesn't work either).
I have followed some bugs about how to make .net work (not only install), but they seem old and they confused me more.
Do you have any idea on this? I think we could upgrade autocad 2008 to silver or gold if this issue was solved.

In my setup, dotnet does work, but it must be installed with winetricks before autocad setup.
For 2008 you should install with winetricks dotnet20, corefonts, mshml3 and cc85 (the native common dialogs) as the built-in ones have some problem and crashes often.
Then, copy from windows urlmon.dll, shlwapi.dll and iertutil.dll end set urlmon.dll and shlwapi.dll as NATIVE (NOT Native+Builtin).

That's all, it runs, but have still many not-so-random crashes, it must be investigated.
If you use it for work, I suggest you autocad2005, that one is rock stable.

Well, registry patch won't be accepted, so we must wait for somebody with enough skills (and spare time) to make a testcase and a "better" patch on it.
In the meanwhile, just follow the howto and use a patched wine....

Nope, just use dotnet2.0 as usual and it's all ok.
If you install without it, dotnet1.1 is installed with autocad, and you'll have the problem.

BTW, I'm using autocad2005 with wine1.1.1 right in this moment, and all perfect.

possible solution to the TTF issue?

Post by JMS »

I've been looking into gdi32.dll without success. I've tried to export my .wine drive_c as a Crossover bottle to try and see what happens.

They are still using wine 0.9.6 so I replaced kernell.32.so inside the crossover /SharedSupport/CrossOver/lib/wine/ with the wine 1.0 one to run autocad. And... surprise!! It runs, and the text is smooth and fast as in windows The problem is that this is a privative app and we don't have the source, but could be a beginning.

Then, I copied the freefont libs and gdi32.so from crossover to my wine and launch autocad... all the menu fonts feel like in crossover but... our issue is still there.

I think the problem could be in x11drv and not in gdi

-------------------------------------------------------------------

BTW I've worket out all my problems with dotnet20 using a build from here http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/
Now all the errors and random crashes have gone. I can use Autocad as in windows but for the TTF. Previously I was using my own build and I think some libraries were missing.
Silver for me If someone else can reproduce my results.

When the fonts are working it will be Gold indeed.

Well, the slow-fonts problem is the last real one... at least, for 2005. 2008 has too many random crashes.
And, vbaide also crash often in 2005, and you must be careful with lisp ide too : if you open it, open help inside it, close lisp ide and then try to close lisp help, it hangs.
So, don't forget to close lisp help when lisp ide is opened.
BTW I'm developing a large lisp app with strong automation usage and it works perfectly.

For the TT fonts I developed a small app that substitutes all TT on drawing with non-tt fonts, saving previous state on drawing itself. So, I run NOTT when I start working on my drawing, and another NOTT to restore original fonts just before sending to customers.
With no true type fonts in action autocad 2005 is even faster than in windows xp.

About the slow TT problem... I did some investigations, and it seems to do many unnecessary font calls (reading metrics too many times, for example) but I have no time yet to go deeper.

I'd put it to platinum without that one.....

Yep, I forgoto to mention.... mtext often crashes, but that's not a big problem for me... I always use dtext instead of mtext.
It should be not too hard to solve, indeed.

autocad 2008 and wine

Post by raja_s_patil »

Thanks ruelle

I have Tried to follow procedure as mentioned in following
but the installer crashes in between while configuring install
so I gave up and posted a query in forum.
I'm using 2004 (ubuntu 8.04 and wine 1.1.2) cause 2008 it's not suitable for work now..

BTW I saw a lot of new bugs related to autocad: http://bugs.winehq.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=AUTOCAD..
yes I went through most of them to see if there is any clue,
unfortunately not found any.

Even 2007 also fails in installation.

anyway we have to wait for bug clearance till that time
keep on using m$ XP no alternative. For me I use
very occasionally Autocad and Sketchup and I tried
them for few (almost 15 to 20) friends who showed
willingness to shift to Linux if ACAD and GSU works on it

Thanks and Best Regards

I'm wondering when AutoCAD 2008 (requires .NET Framework 2.0) will be suitable for work?? months? years?
Is it possible to get Wine previsions?

[I don't ask about 2009 couse it requires .NET Framework 3.0..]

Why don't add 2008 as 1.* Wine feature?

[AutoCAD is the second "most wanted" application.. http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/16836.html ]

Well ruelle,

I havenot given up the hope but I could not
try Autocad 200x on linux since I am Doing
it for my friends not for me. Whatever my
requirements are there have been 100%
fulfilled by wine (only 6/7 applications from windows)
and have made shift to ubuntu for last 1 month
i have not booted Win XP and carrying out
all of my routine work only on KUbuntu.

Thanks to KUbuntu, wine & wine Community.

In year 2000/2001 I tried linux for first time
with RH and Suse but could not shift to it
on desktop but adopted for production
server side implementation but with Ubuntu
i felt that i can adopt it on desktop also and
did that. Linux and wine have Improved very much
since my first try and i am confident that the
speed of improvement will much higher in near
future as more more ppl shift from Windows to Linux
simple demand supply phenomenon.

I strongly feel that day is not far to get
Autocad on Linux may be through wine or Native One.

Thanks and Best Regards

I wonder why there is no native support if this a most wanted app.
btw, if it uses .NET for almost all the code, there should be _less_ work to do so.

I wonder why being so an important app wine gurus don't solve a couple of really trivial bugs that keeps it from being platinum rated.... Still working on damn't M$ Office that most Linux users won't ever see on their desktops.
Before somebody asks why I don't fix them myself... I did for one bug, I found the solution for another one, but I lost my hope to see the patch on wine three... And I spotted the cause of a third possible bug (the slow text rendering with truetype). But it seems that for patches to go inside wine three they must be together with testcases that, for me, are just by far more complicated to code than patches themselves.
