I use the GameKeyboard application to activate the keyboard.

Install Hacker's Keyboard, turn on permanent notification in it's settings. This creates a notification in the notification area of the phone that allows the keyboard to be manually activated.

To activate gboard on an android device open the settings option, go to system languages and input, then tap virtual keyboard manage keyboards, and turn on gboard.
