Re: Can I Play PSO2 (Phantasy Star Online 2) on Wine?

I don't think it will ever work, the game uses nprotect game guard (argh!). Unless someone figures out a way to remove it. Nprotect game guard is a rootkit to prevent hacking/cheating. It's so bad it makes my computer reboot every time the game crashes, and yeah, it crashes a lot. It's a great game ...

Re: how are AMD video cards with wine these days?

I have a notebook with AMD E-350 APU, and a desktop with a Nvidia Geforce GTX 550, and my advice is get a NVIDIA.

The performance loss between Windows and wine is much bigger with AMD.

Also, AMD cards seem to be optimized for DirectX, the OpenGL performance is poor even on Windows.

That's the cause of your poor performance. Not the card itself, but the drivers.
Get a Nvidia and you will have close to native performance on most games.

It is not that the AMD/ATI video cards are poor, just the drivers. Totally agree. I have a Sony Vaio netbook with AMD E-350 APU, and it's a great machine. So much better than the Nvidia ION "solution". I bought AMD this time because I had a terrible experience with Nvidia graphic cards on...

Most games will just work with AMD GPU on wine. BUT... 1) Sadly many games (specially Direct3D games) will suffer from terrible performance. They will crawl at about 10-50% the frame rate they would run on Windows in the same machine. 2) Catalyst / fglrx is still a terrible piece of software. And I ...

Did you install Catalyst? Try reinstalling it.

That's strange, I have an old GeForce 8500 GT, and performance in Windows and Linux is almost the same in OpenGL mode.
Uncheck "reduce input lag" and disable your desktop effects.

I have an idea.

You could install the games for them in a custom WINEPREFIX and of course, create the proper shortcuts for them.

Then you can break the default WINEPREFIX so when they click an executable it won't work.

Well, I have that game, and I can give you a tip. The game won't run unless it finds a few required registry keys, which have your serial number, and the folder where the game is installed. If you simply try to run a pre-installed copy of the game, it won't start. You must either install it properly...

nVidia is so much better for wine. Sadly, AMD APUs are a much better hardware than nVidia Ions... The AMD Catalyst drivers (proprietary) are buggy and too slow for wine. The open-source AMD drivers are even slower, too slow to actually run something in real life. Only if they had a decent driver...

There are similar typing bugs on Windows, and several workarounds.
Is there any workaround that works in wine?

Looks like this is an AMD/ATI driver issue.
Not really. I think you have missed the previous posts.
It's the exact same problem with NVIDIA. And VirtualBox too.
It seems Macs with NVIDIA can go a little bit more far, but they crash too.
It's surely a wined3d issue.

My tests with Super Street Fighter IV:

WinXP wine
Nvidia system: 45-60 fps 45-60 fps
ATI system: 40-60 fps 7-14 fps (unplayable)

And that's why ATI drivers still suck.

This is strange.

I remember there was a problem with Vista and typing... It's probably the same issue we see on wine.

I also remember I could type the character's name in the past, now I can't.

Maybe it's related to a specific system configuration, or something in the game installation.

AppdB and Bugzilla suggestion

Video acceleration is an essential aspect of personal computers now, and it's becoming more important every day. Not only for games, but also for most modern OS interfaces, video decoding and all kinds of applications are depending on it now. So, I think both AppDB and Bugzilla should have 2 adition...
