Steam games unable to play

Post by tyrlop »

Wine Version 1.2, Ubuntu Lycid Lynx
Games that I've tried to launch:
Half-Life (Goldsource)
Day of Defeat
Sven Co-op

I have tried to run the games with Steam normal installation and with Steam Installed with winetricks

Terminal Output when I tried to run Steam and then Half-Life under Steam.

Code: Select all

You're not the only one! I ran into this problem after upgrading ubuntu two days ago, and I haven't found a fix yet. I'm not sure if it's just GoldSource games at this point, because that's all I play, but Steam loads just fine. When I try to play Half-Life, I get to the opening screen of Gordon Holding his shotgun, then it either freezes or disappears, and never draws the menu. I've tried passing dozens of different options to launch the game, but the same happens with CounterStrike, crashing before a menu appears. How can we figure this out? I also had the problem initially with wine 1.2, then I downloaded and installed the most recent wine, but to no avail. Nothing seems to be working that uses the Half-Life 1 engine.

My system: Asus nForce board, AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 4800+, PCIe Nvidia 9400GT (512M), 4Gigs RAM, Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx kernel 2.6.32-24 generic running gnome w/2 desktops.

Half-Life worked flawlessly before I upgraded the kernel, so perhaps it's a kernel bug? How do I get the output you posted above?

I don't even make it to the loading screen......some games just do nothing, while Portal and Team Fortress 2 resize the display then crash. I launch games using a second X server on DISPLAY :1 using the following commands:
script1: wine.steam
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine.steam wine ~/.wine.steam/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/steam.exe
script2, the one I actually type: steam
xinit wine.steam -- :1
Probably a better way to do it, but that's what made sense to me and was really easy to write.

I'm going to install Starcraft 2 right now. I couldn't get it running with a cracked version, but I was only trying that while waiting for my copy to arrive in the mail.

kernel 2.6.33-gentoo-r2
nvidia 190.53-r1
wine 1.3.0

I didn't upgrade kernel, graphic drivers or wine, and steam games just stopped working (tf2, portal, cs1.6) they crash at the moment of hoping into the game (when a 3d rendered objects are to be shown... however, the HL2 3d rendered menu background works just fine)

I dunno if it's related, but i can't think of anything else that could be... Packages I upgraded were:

media-libs/libv4l-0.5.3
x11-drivers/xf86-video-v4l-0.2.0
x11-libs/libFS-1.0.0
media-tv/xawtv-3.95-r1

media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.20-r4
net-im/pidgin-2.5.9

On that note, has anyone contacted Steam support? I can't post on their forums yet, but since everything worked so flawlessly before for me, I'm not about to give up. I've been playing half-life exclusively on Linux for the past five years now...

Since Valve does NOT develop Steam for Linux, they also probably give a shit aboutr supporting Steam for Wine ;] ..sorry to say:p

Of course would we all appriciate a native linux support for Steam..

I'm not hopeful at all. At this point, I wish they would just undo whatever they did last weekend so I could play half-life again. It used to run fine without Steam, too...

After reading around ang googling here and there.. tha last news I find is that they haven't planned any linux support yet. Of course I hope that is not the truth, but I'm afraid it is:p At steampowered.com they also write that they are not developing any Steam for linux. :(

hi

I just want to add my frustration onto this thread about steam game on wine. I'm trying to load empire total war and Napoleon total war. For both game, I goto the copyright page and it freezes. I ran the game in terminal and the last output are:

I agree with others in the above posts that this may be a steam update problem, but since other window-users aren't having the same problem and since steam and linux system don't go together officially, I don't think steam support will give much help and the only help probably will come from this forum. So with this in mind, I really hope someone can help me.

Thanks
