I assume that wine doesn't like OLE programs using OpenGL

Post by A Nonny Moose »

Just tried to run GMax. Got the splash screen and then,

err:ole:CoUninitialize Mismatched CoUninitialize
err:seh:setup_exception_record stack overflow 1028 bytes in thread 0026 eip 7bc3ed88 esp 02240f2c stack 0x2240000-0x2241000-0x2340000

Really, folks, I'm too old for all that Hexadecimal stuff.

Gmax 1.2 doesn't fair well according to most users who've tried it in WINE:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... ingId=7377
<http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... ingId=7377>

Whenever thinking about trying out a program you've never tried to run
in WINE before, the appdb is your first port of call to see what
difficulties, if any, you can expect to face. Simply having a bad rating
in the appdb isn't any reason not to try your program, just as a
positive rating doesn't guarantee you will have success on your system.
Sometimes workarounds are posted in the comments area of a particular
appdb entry.

Please have a look at the link and look in the comments area to see if
anyone else is having the same problem or has figured out a workaround.
If you find out anything helpful through personal research and
troubleshooting, create an appdb account and share your experience with
the community.

Cheers,

Bryan

Thanks for the problem report about gmax and wine.
I've updated the gmax appdb entry and filed two more bug
reports.

gmax seems to run fine if you do 'winetricks vcrun6' first,
and if you *don't* choose opengl in the initial dialog.

Does that help?

DanKegel: I need just one more thing

Post by A Nonny Moose »

Thanks, Dan. I ran that winetricks script successfully and now need to get back to the choose your graphics screen. I know it is a command line option, but I don't have the help files (didn't come with the download). Do you know what the option is?

Still no soap on command line stuff

Post by A Nonny Moose »

I went back to Turbosquid and downloaded the Help files, the Tutorial, and the Maps library (why not have them?) but could not find the Developer's guide which is supposed to contain the gen on the command line options. I really need to reset back to Heidi, and if I could only find how, I think this might work.

The reason I need Gmax is that the SC4D Building Architect Tool (BAT) is a game pack for Gmax. Can't do new buildings and lots without it.

An important requirement for applications which mix 2D and 3D is that you use decent video drivers. Nvidia and ATI should work fine and depending on the distribution also Intel drivers but open source drivers might have issues.

General Comments

Post by A Nonny Moose »

I have NVidia drivers and hardware. All that works fine.

I ran 'winetricks help >mylist.txt' and got quite a nice listing of capabilities. You guys are pirates, and I'll bet you're not even in Pittsburgh. *giggle*

Something interesting came up while running SC4RH. The general crap-out starts with losing your sound while zoning. There is some kind of hiccup and the sound quits. I've noticed it before, but didn't think much of it, but the next thing that happens is that the graphics start to go funnier and funnier. I usually save before it crashes, then restart, which seems to help for a while, although sometimes I have to reboot. Whatever gets stepped on affects gdm's signoff screen which becomes about 50% or less transparent during shutdown. If the kernel isn't protected from wine, then it is being stepped on, and I suspect something happens to the page table or the graphics drivers. And yes, Deleted I did know how to write an operating system.

Ooops!

I called up what I thought was going to be the OLE stuff I needed for Gmax and I scragged my wine installation. Starting over from scratch, with more care. Tune in tomorrow.

Have a nice day.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23653 is reported fixed in wine-1.6-rc1 (and recent 1.5's).
You do still need 'winetricks msvcirt' to run Gmax, though.
