Noob problems with Darwine

Post by beerco »

I've installed darwine 1.1.9 on my mac. I've read all of the tutorials and forums that I could find but I'm still not able to solve my problem. I imagine I must be missing something that's so obvious that it doesn't even make its way into a tutorial.

I can't run programs. If I start winehelper and try to run a program (say regedit.exe) I get the errors at the end of this post in the log:

The app was started from the applications folder, not the fake c: drive.

Am I missing some files? Any advice on what I'm doing wrong?

TIA,

No, this is problem that appeared with a newer build of Wine for MacOSX
that Mike Kronenberg produces. We have not been able to figure out
what caused it. It may be something that Apple did during the upgrade
process for Leopard, it may be because of external libraries, or it just
may be a build that runs for some, but not for others.
I can't run programs. If I start winehelper and try to run a program
(say regedit.exe) I get the errors at the end of this post in the log:
Can you try this:

Open a terminal session.
Change directories to /Applications/Darwine/Sample\ Library\ Applications
wine regedit

and see if this runs and if you get any strange error messages after Wine
crashes?
The app was started from the applications folder, not the fake c: drive.

Am I missing some files? Any advice on what I'm doing wrong?
[Error messages removed]

Questions based upon what I wrote above [please use the quote feature and
reply to each with an answer below the question:

What version of MacOSX are you using?

Do you have either the Fink or MacPorts products installed?

Have you installed XQuartz (if you don't know what it is, you have not)?

Also, I am working with the folks at good-day.net to get a newer version of
Wine for MacOSX uploaded. Please be patient.

Interesting, I went into that folder , typed "wine regedit" and got wine: command not found

Mac OSX v10.5.6

No to both

Nope

As someone who got burned by Zach Drayer's build (which subsequently breaks Mike Kronenberg's build, despite it working perfectly before), I think I've found the cause of the issue. Drayer's build dumps a lot of FreeType crap into the hidden /usr/local folder. Nuking everything in there (the only other thing I had was MacFUSE, easily replaceable) did the trick, and Mike's build works once again.

I'll check on this. I know that Mike's builds do not drop files anywhere else other than in the Darwine application 'folder'. It is unusual that Mike's build would be looking in the /usr/local directory structure for any files as well.

I agree with that. I also deleted all the Freetype and Fontforge files and now the Darwine works

Today I tried to build last development version of wine from scratch, it was
built successfully, but running ./winecfg produces same error

Couple questions -

I found a usr/local folder but can't find any Freetype stuff. Could you post step by step instructions on how to nuke this (I wouldn't own a mac if I were fluent in unix)

Is there any way to be able to see all files including hidden files using the apple finder?

You should not have to remove anything except entries related to the Zach's code in /usr/local/lib. Look for files that begin with libfontforge, libfreetype, libdraw, libgioftp, libgunicode, and lastly libgutils. The way that MacOSX first looks for files is to look in /usr/lib and then /usr/local/lib.

There is. Google for programs that support this. HOWEVER, these files are deliberately hidden because if you delete them, you are in for a system rebuild. I've seen folks that have deleted files that were needed and did not have a backup of them (Time Machine will NOT do this for you.) My suggestion is if you don't know what the file does, do not delete it. Ask first in a Mac support forum.

No feedback means that the information in my previous mail listing worked?
