gdi32.dll error

Post by ckyr »

I am a new wine user. I downloaded the darwin wine implementation for mac OS X ver 1.1.7 (http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/) and installed on my computer.
I run the wine helper application and tried to open some of the sample applications that came with it. No matter what I try to open from the sample windows application folder that came with the program I get the same error message:err:module:attach_process_dlls "gdi32.dll" failed to initialize, aborting

Any ideas what might be causing it? My goal is to install vector NTI on my mac (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=6829). When I open the installer for this program I get the same error message, so I guess there is something wrong with my darwin and/or wine and need to fix this first.

Which version of MacOSX do you have installed on your Mac Intel system
(you cannot use Darwine on a PowerPC system, such as a G3/G4/G5)?
Which version of X11 do you have installed? It is recommended that you
install X11 from Apple (this is installed by default on a system that
came with MacOSX 10.5 [Leopard] installed on it) and then install
XQuartz from the MacOSXForge. I recommend installing at least 2.3.1 or
higher. Please note that you will have to re-install it if you install
any MacOSX updates. Leopard is now at release 5 (10.5.5) and there are
several security updates that are available.

If these suggestions do not correct the problem, please advise Mike on
his web page that you are having problems. Darwine is not supported by
the main Wine program, but some of us out here provide help to
struggling Mac users, of which I am one of them.

Thank you.

Thanks for your reply. I have a macbook pro (intel) and the latest os with all software updates. I installed X11 from apple DVD and then downloaded the XQuartz from here: http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/X112.3.1

I am trying to install it, but the installation is stuck at "configuring installation" for more than 30 minutes now...

Any ideas?

This should not be so. Something is wrong and I'm not knowledgeable
enough to answer. I would suggest going to the XQuartz web page and
asking what can be done about this. XQuartz should install in less than
ten minutes.

I am having the same issue. I am running os x 10.5.5 with XQuartz 2.3.1 and Darwine 1.1.7. (I also tried 1.0.1 with same issues)
The installers both ran successfully, but I am not able to run any of the Sample WinLib Applications. They all crash with various error log messages, but all have this in common: err:module:attach_process_dlls "gdi32.dll" failed to initialize, aborting

here's the full log message:
err:module:attach_process_dlls "gdi32.dll" failed to initialize, aborting
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"Z:\\Applications\\Darwine\\Sample WineLib Applications\\winecfg.exe" failed, status c0000005

I get the same message for notepad.exe and the others as well.

Any ideas? As I said, I tried darwine 1.0.1 as well.

I'm very new to wine (and macs :p). I installed darwine on my mac today, and the exact same error message appears when I try and run the samples.

I'm also running OS X 10.5.5 with XQuartz 2.3.1 and Darwine 1.1.7 on the new 13-inch macbook.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Where did you get your Darwine? I'm going to install both Mike Kronenberg's and Zach Drayer's releases to see if I can recreate this problem. If I can, I will submit a bug report to the respective creator.

winks are not necessary here. We all want to improve Wine and Darwine.

Thank you.

I can confirm that Zach Drayer's Darwine build exhibits this behaviour
and I've contacted him off the list about this with logging files.

Next I will test Mike Kronenberg's builds to see if they exhibit the
same behaviour.

Mike Kronenberg's build did not exhibit this behaviour. I was able to
create a new .wine directory and run the notepad program, which crashed
Zach Drayer's build.

I will test 1.1.6 from Zach's site.

Just to let you know that Zach was able to recreate the error and is
working on a solution. I found that the previous version did not work
as well. It may be that Mike is doing something that Zach is not and
the problem may not be Wine or the method used to create Darwine but
possibly the way that XQuartz interfaces with the program. Mike may
have found a workaround and Zach is unaware of it. I expect Zach to
fine and implement a fix, hopefully before the release of Wine 1.1.8.

Thanks, switching to Mike's 1.1.7 build fixed the problem for me as well.

Actually, it is my turn to ask questions.

Do you have any part of Fink installed on your system?

I am trying to find something in common that is causing the crash in
Zach's builds but not in another build.

Thank you.

Still occurring with 1.1.7

Post by bobthehorse »

Having installed the 1.0.1 release originally and experiencing the error, I tried installing 1.1.7. Unfortunately, this did not resolve the issue for me. I receive the same error:
err:module:attach_process_dlls "gdi32.dll" failed to initialize, aborting
for each app I attempt to run.

I am not running Fink. Running 10.5.5 with XQuartz 2.3.1 installed. Any word on when 1.1.8 will be released?

Thank you.

It's interesting that I started gettting this error with Zach Drayer's
release of 1.1.8 and with Mike Kronenberg's 1.1.9. Now both appear to
be 'broken' and I don't know what I did.

I don't have Fink installed.

I've tested Mike's 1.1.9 release and it has the same gdi32.dll error.

I don't have Fink installed.

I'm going to install Mike's 1.1.9 release and see if that also produces errors.

If you don't have Fink or MacPorts installed, it should work. I used a
simple fix, that breaks printing, and it worked.

I'm trying to figure out how to disable Fink to see if it that fixes the
problem.

I have tested the wine builds from both Mike and Zach, as well as as my own compile, and all are broken with the gdi32.dll initialization failure error. I believe the problem appeared from the 10.5.5 update or the Quicktime update shortly before that, because all builds worked fine before those two updates. I think that something inside the system has changed, which is causing the problems. When I get some free time I'll try to play around with wine some and see if I can find anything more out on the problem, as well as find out what gdi32.dll does.

Are you using Fink or MacPorts?

Mike pointed out there is a problem with running his Darwine builds with
Fink, that is why I am asking. If you are not, then something else is
the problem.

I do have MacPorts, but the error was appearing long before I installed MacPorts, so I don't believe that is affecting anything involving the gdi32.dll error.

Also, I have found a sort of temporary workaround by using CrossOver's gdi32.dll instead of Wine's. Using that I was able to use Wine 1.1.10 to run Windows programs again, and other than a window flicker that randomly occurs, it works perfectly.

Still occurring with XQuartz 2.3.2.1 and darwine 1.1.9

Post by tigono »

Also updating to XQuartz 2.3.2.1 does not fix the problem.

I tried darwine 1.1.9 from http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/
and also http://www.thisismyinter.net version 1.1.11.

So: any solution hints?

I'm working on this with Zach as the build works on his system, but not
mine.

As a side question, do you have either Fink or MacPorts installed on

Thanks for answering. It`s MacOSX 10.5.6 but it happened also with 10.5.5. Fink is not installed

3. installed wine 1.0.1

and it now works, running 10.5.6 osx

I will look into this. I could not get the latest versions from Mike or
Zach Drayer to run on the system I am using without the gdi32.dll
error. This may take some work on my part and I'm very busy for the
next few weeks. :(
