gdi32.dll error
gdi32.dll error
I am a new wine user. I downloaded the darwin wine implementation for mac OS X ver 1.1.7 (http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/) and installed on my computer.
I run the wine helper application and tried to open some of the sample applications that came with it. No matter what I try to open from the sample windows application folder that came with the program I get the same error message:err:module:attach_process_dlls "gdi32.dll" failed to initialize, aborting
Any ideas what might be causing it? My goal is to install vector NTI on my mac (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=6829). When I open the installer for this program I get the same error message, so I guess there is something wrong with my darwin and/or wine and need to fix this first.

Which version of X11 do you have installed? It is recommended that you
install X11 from Apple (this is installed by default on a system that
came with MacOSX 10.5 [Leopard] installed on it) and then install
XQuartz from the MacOSXForge. I recommend installing at least 2.3.1 or
higher. Please note that you will have to re-install it if you install
any MacOSX updates. Leopard is now at release 5 (10.5.5) and there are
several security updates that are available.
If these suggestions do not correct the problem, please advise Mike on
his web page that you are having problems. Darwine is not supported by
the main Wine program, but some of us out here provide help to
struggling Mac users, of which I am one of them.
Thank you.

Thanks for your reply. I have a macbook pro (intel) and the latest os with all software updates. I installed X11 from apple DVD and then downloaded the XQuartz from here: http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/X112.3.1
I am trying to install it, but the installation is stuck at "configuring installation" for more than 30 minutes now...

I am having the same issue. I am running os x 10.5.5 with XQuartz 2.3.1 and Darwine 1.1.7. (I also tried 1.0.1 with same issues)
The installers both ran successfully, but I am not able to run any of the Sample WinLib Applications. They all crash with various error log messages, but all have this in common: err:module:attach_process_dlls "gdi32.dll" failed to initialize, aborting
here's the full log message:
err:module:attach_process_dlls "gdi32.dll" failed to initialize, aborting
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"Z:\\Applications\\Darwine\\Sample WineLib Applications\\winecfg.exe" failed, status c0000005
I get the same message for notepad.exe and the others as well.
Any ideas? As I said, I tried darwine 1.0.1 as well.

Where did you get your Darwine? I'm going to install both Mike Kronenberg's and Zach Drayer's releases to see if I can recreate this problem. If I can, I will submit a bug report to the respective creator.I'm very new to wine (and macs :p). I installed darwine on my mac today, and the exact same error message appears when I try and run the samples.
I'm also running OS X 10.5.5 with XQuartz 2.3.1 and Darwine 1.1.7 on the new 13-inch macbook.

Still occurring with 1.1.7
Having installed the 1.0.1 release originally and experiencing the error, I tried installing 1.1.7. Unfortunately, this did not resolve the issue for me. I receive the same error:
err:module:attach_process_dlls "gdi32.dll" failed to initialize, aborting
for each app I attempt to run.
I am not running Fink. Running 10.5.5 with XQuartz 2.3.1 installed. Any word on when 1.1.8 will be released?
Thank you.

I have tested the wine builds from both Mike and Zach, as well as as my own compile, and all are broken with the gdi32.dll initialization failure error. I believe the problem appeared from the 10.5.5 update or the Quicktime update shortly before that, because all builds worked fine before those two updates. I think that something inside the system has changed, which is causing the problems. When I get some free time I'll try to play around with wine some and see if I can find anything more out on the problem, as well as find out what gdi32.dll does.

I do have MacPorts, but the error was appearing long before I installed MacPorts, so I don't believe that is affecting anything involving the gdi32.dll error.
Also, I have found a sort of temporary workaround by using CrossOver's gdi32.dll instead of Wine's. Using that I was able to use Wine 1.1.10 to run Windows programs again, and other than a window flicker that randomly occurs, it works perfectly.
