Hi,
I am a new Ubuntu user and I am trying to get rid of Windows from all my computers forever! The only hurdle is my medical billing software Kareo. When I tried to run the exe file it states that it is extracting an MSI file and then shut out.
I tried extracting the msi files running w/ the wine msi switch but it states that the msi file cannot run w/o the setup file. The program can be freely downloaded from the kareo website.
I tried to get support to help me but they are not interested and asked me to use Windows instead. They don't support Linux and show no interest in doing so.
I am open to any ideas except for keeping windows on all my pcs. I love Ubuntu and I have not desire to go back to the other bug ridden and virus infested software.
Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated,
regards
rgor

Wine FAQ (http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ) has information on how to
install programs in Wine (and is generally an *extremely* recommended
reading anyway).

If you're using Natty 11.04, beware that the unity desktop has some
bugs impacting wine, so Ubuntu classic desktop (or kubuntu, xubuntu,
...) is preferable.

Thank you for the guide, it was really useful. I got into the terminal mode, and typed wine start kareo_setup.exe. I got a window popup saying extracting MSI, then I got this message:

rg@Linux:~/Downloads$ wine start Kareo_Setup.exe
fixme:exec:SHELL_execute flags ignored: 0x00000100
rg@Linux:~/Downloads$ fixme:advapi:LookupAccountNameW (null) L"rg" (nil) 0x3382c0 (nil) 0x3382c4 0x3382b8 - stub
fixme:advapi:LookupAccountNameW (null) L"rg" 0x13fdd8 0x3382c0 0x140d88 0x3382c4 0x3382b8 - stub
err:msi:remove_tracked_tempfiles failed to delete L"C:\\users\\rg\\Temp\\msi213a.tmp"

and it put me back to the terminal windows. I'm messing up somewhere. I've searched through the manual (it started getting over my head) and the faq. Can anyone suggest any alternatives besides going back to Windows?

The installer created an error log file also. I don't have the computational capacity to understand what is being said so I thought I would post it:

What Wine version are you using? This function was changed in December of last year to not print stub.

Upgrade your Wine to at least wine-1.3.18 (latest is wine-1.3.19) and try again with clean / new wineprefix.

If it helps this is a web based application i.e you install it so you can access your medical billing records.

Windows is not an option...

I tried to get some help from support but they acted like I was an idiot for even trying. I know there is a way but I'm not sure how. I'll keep checking back in the forums in case someone passes through this neck of the woods.

I am going to try contacting the development team directly and see
what they say.

You are welcome. I did receive a well worded reply from the developers
and they are looking into what they can do to help.

I received a reply today from the Kareo development team and after I
build Wine 1.3.22, I will think about downloading Kareo and
installing/using it. This is a trial/demo version and I will attempt to
find out what needs to be added/fixed with Wine and enter appropriate
bug reports/work-arounds.

Note: I am PROHIBITED from giving this to others, but John if you
contact me either off-list or via message on the Forums, I will provide
contact information. The trial is NOT publically available.

If there is anything I can do on my end to help, please do no hesitate to ask. I know most of the stuff would go over my head, but I would be glad to offer any type "test dummy" type of assistance.

I still have to get to an Internet connection that will support the
download. My ISP was out yesterday evening and it appears that they may
have fixed a networking issue.

I'm well aware that I'm on here a few months late, but I was hoping to find some step-by-step answers. I'm not utilizing Kareo at the moment, but it's one of the medical billing softwares that my boss is looking into. That said, he's also not adamant about keeping Windows on our system. . . .but he doesn't want Mac either. Pretty large conundrum, right?

Anyway, my boss is looking for a simpler OS -- one much like Ubuntu. The biggest hurdle to get through is that he's put me in charge of switching all this over and I don't know the first thing about changing OS's and making medical billing software compatible. Think anyone can help me out? It would be super appreciated. We want the switch to be as quick and painless as possible. While we're not a paperless office (yet), we have a lot of saved info. Thanks!!!

If you're not fully up to speed with Linux, you could do a lot worse
than hiring a few days consultation from somebody local who is.

If most of your non-billing information is in a common format, e.g. MS
Office and doesn't use fancy tricks, such as VBA macros, it should be
immediately accessible from Open Office/Libre Office - at least that's
my experience. Same goes for web pages, especially if they're written in
HTML and PHP.

Your billing software may be easy if there's a native Linux port, it
works under Wine, or if its sitting on a database using a schema that's
easily ported to one of the native Linux databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL,
Oracle - the first may be easiest). It looks to me that the billing
system authors may be your first port of call there.

works under Wine, or if its sitting on a database using a schema that's
easily ported to one of the native Linux databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL,
Oracle - the first may be easiest). It looks to me that the billing
system authors may be your first port of call there.

Thanks for the advice, Martin! Much appreciated! =)

Well,
I just moved to Linux Mint. I haven't heard anything from Kareo yet. I would think they would be able to at least work with WINE to give those who are not interested in Windows malware.
Anyway, has anyone heard of any headway in terms of making it work?

Installed linux mint 13 and I thought I might come back and give Kareo a try but no luck. Same issues. If anyone would like the program it is about 33mb. The issues seems to be somewhere in the installer.
The link to get the file is www.kareo.com/help/downloads.
It seems to be an msi file. I'm thinking maybe accessing the temp file created during the install is causing the problem?

Anyway, I'll keep crossing my finger. Please give me a buzz if there is anything I can do to help with my limited computer abilities.

The link gives a "404 Page Not Found" error.

Your click-fu is weak, try removing the period at the end of his sentence :-)

It doesn't install for me; I get an installshield fatal error. I'll file a bug
and link to it here.
