What am I doing wrong that I can not get Civ4 to run?

I am running ubuntu 10.04, wine 1.2.2

No matter what I try I get this when running Civ4 (after installation)

Upgrade Wine. Read AppDB pages for your game. It doesn't work on Wine out of the box.

1.2.2 is the latest stable release. I prefer to use stable.
I have run it before on wine 1.0.1 or something.

I have read the AppDB pages for this game. I have tried every bit of information on those pages. Without success. That is why I am asking here.

Stable just means that we stopped where certain applications will run.
Development versions are safe enough to try and run other applications on.

Did they say to update to the latest version? If they did, that is what
you are going to have to do.

Which page? There are many versions of Civ IV listed, with different instructions. What version do you have and what exactly did you do?

Then I will try that.

First try was http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... ngId=43142 as this was the version of the game I have. Although it uses an older version of ubuntu and wine.
Also tried methods mentioned on http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=5254

I will try to update to the latest dev version and try again.

Any links to what must be done to get dx9 apps working in latest dev version of wine?

Depends on the app; check the AppDB. Civ IV has run fine for me in every Wine version for the past two years with just the msxml3 and d3dx9_36 overrides, but I have the no-DRM Complete DVD version. If you have a DRM'd version, you may need a no-cd crack.

there is nothing to do generally... many dx9 apps work as is. Depending on the game and problems though you might have to do some things... thats what the AppDB is for.

Still no luck. Now running wine 1.3.14

When I start the game I get:

Code: Select all

fixme:service:QueryServiceObjectSecurity 0x1379a0 4 0x137c58 0 0x32eeb8 - semi-stub
fixme:service:QueryServiceObjectSecurity 0x1379a0 4 0x137c58 28 0x32eeb8 - semi-stub
fixme:service:SetServiceObjectSecurity 0x1379a0 4 0x32ee34
then the splash screen is displayed

and then just after the splash screen

Code: Select all

fixme:system:SystemParametersInfoW Unimplemented action: 55 (SPI_SETMOUSEKEYS)
fixme:system:SystemParametersInfoW Unimplemented action: 59 (SPI_SETSTICKYKEYS)
err:ole:CoCreateInstance apartment not initialised
err:ole:CoCreateInstance apartment not initialised
err:ole:CoCreateInstance apartment not initialised
err:ole:CoCreateInstance apartment not initialised
err:ole:CoCreateInstance apartment not initialised
err:ole:CoCreateInstance apartment not initialised
err:ole:CoCreateInstance apartment not initialised
err:ole:CoCreateInstance apartment not initialised
err:ole:CoCreateInstance apartment not initialised
err:ole:CoCreateInstance apartment not initialised
Then nothing.

Can someone say what the "err:ole:CoCreateInstance apartment not initialised" error is about? Google does not yield much useful results.

It means that your program thread could not start. Don't know why as
there was no further information provided in the log file.

Could you explain how, as this may be of help to someone experiencing the same problem?

I am tempted to say:

But I downloaded the patch, installed it, and the game worked from there.

No idea what was changed by the patch to make it work for me though.
