Hi

I'm trying to get Civilization 3 (Complete) working.
So far, i've managed to install it (basically shoving all 3 CDs into 1 folder, then running installer from there)

And it runs! (Start up vids, main menu)

However, when i get to the main game screen, the black areas of the screen go... transparent (so i can see my desktop background or whatever)
ALso, crashes. Around 1 in 3 attempts at getting this to run, my whole computer crashes, which i would've thought is a pretty serious bug in WINE

Wine version 1.5.5

I also attach the log of running the .exe in the terminal. The font related messages start after i have pressed the exit/close program button

ALso, crashes. Around 1 in 3 attempts at getting this to run, my whole computer crashes, which i would've thought is a pretty serious bug in WINE

Wine is a user-level program, and as such can't crash your whole computer by itself. It can, however, expose bugs in things that can, such as graphics drivers or the kernel.

What graphics card/driver, and what distro? Try turning off desktop effects and/or running in a virtual desktop (winecfg, Graphics tab).

That's probably bug #30669
No idea about the crashing problem as I've never experienced such an issue while playing Civ III. Could be hardware (video driver?) related.

Thanks for that bug link, that looks like that issue (which is annoying, considering the apparent difficulty to fix)

I've been trying to get civ 3 to work on my laptop, and as it now seems to run well I thought I would share my experience.

I initially was having a problem with fonts that was stopping the game starting. My wine version was pretty old, and I read it had been fixed in 1.5.1, so I upgraded to the latest build. I then had the problem you describe (map goes black, completely unplayable) after starting a new game. According to that bug report, a commit in 1.5.4 (i think) caused that. So I set up playonlinux so I can easily control wine versions, and ran it with 1.5.2. Game starts and works perfectly (sound graphics etc). Have played for a couple of hours.

Worth noting this is the steam complete version. Don't have my laptop specs to hand, but its a pretty old machine (5 years) running kubuntu 11.10.
