Exactly the same with me here, too. Thanks, guys. I'd been tearing my hair out over this silly error for the past two days!

You need to ask CodeWeavers for assistance with CrossOver. If the
problem is detemined to be in Wine code, they will ask or develop a
solution.

Hey guys,

So I installed WoW by copying and pasting my brother's Windows WoW install into my .wine Programs folder. I got it all working after a few hours of tweaking without pulling too many teeth.

However, there has consistently been this strange 'void' or shadow under all the characters (even the quest givers, vendors, etc.). Look at the pictures -

I've given you my video settings as well so you can see how I've set them up.

Also, I tried to install the latest AMD Catalyst through my Package Manager (it was recommended on the WineHQ WoW installation and tweaking guide) but it seems to have royally screwed something up - now my FPS rate is at around 1 or 2 while before it was at 10. 10 FPS meant the game was playable... Now, well; not so much.

I've followed loads of advice online, but you guys seem to have your shit together.

Thanks.

I forgot to say that I did completely remove Catalyst after I realised it wasn't helping...

wow runtime error, new with patch 3.3

Post by tparker »

I ended up reinstalling my OS and games on WoW 3.3 patch day, I
haven't run into many problems but I'll throw my system info into the fray
in case someone sees something helpful to them:

Fedora 12 KDE (32 bit)
Wine - 1.1.32-1.fc12 (i686) - installed as 'core package' from package
manger.
nVidia Geforce 6150SE (onboard card)
nVidia driver 190.42

WoW disks were already imaged on our server so I installed from there.

The only tweak I did was using winetricks by:
/bin/sh winetricks vcrun2005sp1 vcrun2005
per: http://www.wowwiki.com/Wine/Troubleshooting (bottom entry)

The only problem I have in game is graphics going to heck in the Pit of
Saron (second of the three new 5mans). Once down in the instance I
start getting big poly lines and chunks, like what most people get in
WoW using D3D instead of opengl. It is changed by my camera angle,
horrible on my night elf, barely a flicker on my gnome.

Everything else in game has been working fine so far, the only thing I
can think of that I haven't tested is WoW voice.

Could be a bug in the video drivers as you're using an ATI card. In any case, if the game is still playable besides those graphical glitches, it's probably a bit lower priority to fix.

Still, it'd be helpful if you posted terminal output while running the game. It might indicate any graphics-related stubs, warnings or or fixme's related to the graphical problems.

Okay, so I fixed my FPS problem by doing this -

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove xorg-driver-fglrx

sudo reboot
I also installed lots things from the Package Manager to do with the Intel chipsets - I have GM965/GL960. So that may have helped..?

@Chris V: I know that's an ATI card, but what chipset model is it? Also, what version of Catalyst are you using?

The solution has been mentioned many times in this topic. And Blizzard in no way will release another patch due to problems people are facing under Linux with Wine. No where in the documentation that is presented by Blizzard does it state that this game is meant to run in anything other than Microsoft. Anytime a patch comes out, it is a standard anticipation by the Linux crowd to expect certain challenges to overcome in getting things working the way they were when it pertains to software that was written explicitly for Microsoft Windows.

There are no guarantees this product will work, or continue to work in the future, on anything other than released in the minimum requirements section laid out by Blizzard. If you are unable to get thing working under Linux you have no argument against Blizzard for they never once said this product was meant to run under Linux.

We all hope it will continue in the future to be able to run under Linux with the use of Wine. Because we do not want to duel-boot whenever we want to play this game. But you cannot expect things to work right out of the box. Linux users find it an enjoyable experience to figure out these puzzles on how to get these programs running outside of their native environments. Please show the developers of these softwares some respect and give them patience, for they are not making any money off the work they are doing in all this.

Linux is for people who want to rule their computer. Windows is for people who want their computer to rule them. To rule your computer means you must take some time to learn it first.

almost forgot... i use ubuntu 9.04 (with 9.10 i get the black screen problem on logon when installing graphics driver), my graphics card is a 4870 with latest drivers... here the error:

Did you ever find a solution for this, Igb? I'm encountering exactly the same errors, except with wine 1.1.42

I'm encountering this with latest drivers from ATI. The problem is actually intermittent over reboots, though.

Same problem

Post by mefistofeles »

I can confirm this problem with latest catalyst/ATI driver to date (10.6) and wine version 1.1.44.

Please if you know why this happens or a possible solution I will very much appreciate it. I'm looking forward for a response. Thanks.

Solution

Post by mefistofeles »

Ok, I found the solution to the problem with GLX error.

It was quite simple, just had to install the catalyst-utils package for 32 bits, the name in ArchLinux is lib32-catalyst-utils, and that solved the problem. The game is running just fine now. Thanks.
