Apropos Agent 6.5 crashing when launched

Post by anystupidname »

When running it from the Desktop icon a taskbar button comes up with the hour glass for about 20 seconds and disappears. So I ran the desktop shortcut's command in a terminal and go this:

Could somebody please assist? I'd be happy to provide more details if only I knew what would help. This is on Ubuntu hardy with wine 1.0 and I had to use winetricks to install dotnet20 first.

I'm now at 1.1.19 but the debug info is the same. Any ideas?

Looks like it's a dotnet application. Not all of them work well. You
might try using windows version of mono instead of dotnet. If that
doesn't work, file a bug.

Thanks for the suggestion about mono (it looks cool) but, if I'm correctly understanding how it works, I'd either need the source for this crappy (closed source win32 only) app I'm trying to run or this mono-wine bridge would need to be complete?!?
http://wiki.winehq.org/Mono-Wine_bridge

Is there anything specific in the debug output that makes you think the dotnet installation in wine is the culprit? Could it be anything else?

I've followed howtos before that have you register specific DLLs with wine and/or change how the DLLs are interfaced with for specific apps. Is there a procedure I can use to identify calls to DLLs by this app and if those DLLs need to be treated natively or another way?

Unhandled Exception: System.ArgumentException: Font '?' cannot be found.
at System.Drawing.FontFamily.GetGdipGenericSansSerif()
So apparently it chokes because it can't find some font? How did you install dotnet? Use winetricks to install it. And if the problem persists, you can use winetricks to install additional fonts. This errormessage looks like something that can be worked around i guess

Use winetricks:
$ wget kegel.com/wine/winetricks
$ sh winetricks mono20

Though as qwertymn suggested, could be a font problem. Try:
$ sh winetricks corefonts
or
$ sh winetircks allfonts

Thank you both for the suggestions. I have tried several combinations. After installing allfonts and sticking with dotnet20, the debug is at its "best".

I tried both versions of mono available and unfortunately, the crashes were worse and roughly the same. If somebody REALLY wants to know, I can provide screenshots or something.

When running this app in Winblows, it docks itself at the bottom or top of your screen. Does the debug/crash info look to you like it is having a problem with that? I tried telling wine to emulate a virtual desktop in hopes that it would make a difference but it didn't...

Hi, so apparently the crah is gone? Could you try if the program is at least running (i mean in background, if it's not visible bit invisibly docked) by doing 'ps -ux'?

If it's not running, i guess it just bumped out, and best thing is to provide more additions debug traces

Thanks, I appreciate the continued assistance! A blank virtual desktop window shows up for a little over a second and then disappears. No process appears to remain according to ps -ux. The last two debug lines actually show up after the window disappears. Are you saying there is a way to enable more verbose debugging?

Yes, you could run the app like:

WINEDEBUG=+relay,+seh,+tid wine app_name.exe &>/tmp/log

The debugoutput (in /tmp/log) will be huge, if you put it (bzipped2) up somewhere i could have a look if there's an obvious reason for the crash. Btw: i guess the app has no free download, so we could check ourselves?

Here is the verbose trace:

shrubbery.7z - 252.5 Kb

Thanks again for the help. I looked online for a place to download the app and I can't even find a home page for the company "apropos technology, inc"... The files here have confidential information in configurations and such which I'm not allowed to share.
