Problems Playing Starcraft 2

Post by Samtron »

Hi my name is Sam. I'm very new at all this. I'm having serious problems playing starcraft 2 and i'm utterly frustrated.

I started installing using the instructions on http://www.nosuchthingastwo.com/blog/20 ... ntu-14-04/

I ran into an error:

–2014-07-25 20:55:00– ftp://64.4.17.176/bussys/winnt/winnt-pu ... rofixi.exe
(try: 5) => ‘eurofixi.exe’
Connecting to 64.4.17.176:21… failed: Connection timed out.
Retrying.

which eventually led to failure.

I got some help on the ask Ubuntu forum http://askubuntu.com/questions/502807/s ... for-a-noob

I was asked to try using the scripts on this page http://www.playonlinux.com/en/app-661-S ... berty.html

So far i have managed to get the graphics sort of right and the sound right. This was done by reducing the desktop size in wine config, and when clicking the audio tab choosing pulse audio for each dropdown menu.

The problem i'm having is that every time i try and play the game my mouse pointer is invisible. Next to that the game seems to change my screen size, reducing the desktop working space/game space, but the graphics of the game cover the whole screen. It's like a virtual screen where the buttons are displaced and you have to use some clever guessing to try and press the buttons with an insivible mouse with a displaced and reduced screen.

Please help!!

PlayOnLinux is not supported here. Neither are outside howtos.

The instructions you say you followed call for a slew of overrides and other tweaks. According to the AppDB, Starcraft II is rated platinum in current Wine, which means it should not need any of them. http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... &iId=20882

You didn't mention what Wine version you're using. If it's not the latest development release, upgrade. Delete the wineprefix you've thoroughly messed up and reinstall to a clean, 32 bit one. It's okay to set it to run in an emulated virtual desktop. Consult the AppDB for workarounds for known issues. If the problem persists, post terminal output.

thanks heaps domesio.

I've installed the latest version of wine from this page via terminal. Terminal advised that i had the latest version.

So you're suggesting i consult the app data base for workarounds, any chance you can link the app data base?

lastly in case i need it, how do i post terminal ouput?

Exactly what version is it? If it's not 1.7.23, it's not the latest.

i've got version 1.7.22 of wine installed, when i follow the directions provided http://www.winehq.org/download/ubuntu it keeps installing only the 1.7.22 version.

How can i get 1.7.23?

1.7.22 is close enough, give it a shot. Or wait a couple days for the maintainer to upload 1.7.23.

I have tried purging wine from my system and reinstalling according to the instructions listed here and it installed 1.7.22.

The game loads however my mouse pointer is still invisible leaving it impossible to play.

is there any way i can get some help using these instructions?

" binaries: http://lutris.net/files/runners/wine-1. ... hed.tar.gz
patch applied wine sources: https://github.com/stefand/wine
raw patch: http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-de ... 01106.html

Also requires the following registry edit

HKCU/Software/Wine/Direct3D/CSMT = "enabled"

Ty Mr. Stefan Dösinger now time to uninstall windows for me.

If using Nvidia 310 drivers or above combine with the __GL_THREADED_OPTIMIZATIONS=1 switch for even more FPS. "

i've downloaded the binaries link but have no idea how to "install it". I've been told that this may work

i've since purged/removed all previous versions of play on linux and wine.

I downloaded http://mirrors.ibiblio.org/wine/source/ ... 23.tar.bz2

and somehow managed to figure out how to install it.

However i'm experiencing the same problems with Starcraft, it loads, however my mouse is invisible preventing me from playing SC2.

This must be a very simple problem, i would really appreciate some help with this.

Further to this, i've managed to somehow remove wine config.

so since my abysmal attempt at installing wine 1.7.23...

I decided to install 1.7.22 over the top of it through ubuntu software centre.

this sorta worked. for some strange reason, i'm guessing that the way i installed 1.7.23 missed installing some files, and installing 1.7.22 over the top of it without purging or removing anything corrected this, and finally i checked i was still using 1.7.23 by typing

wine --version

into terminal, which advised i had 1.7.23 installed. Since doing this the mouse has appeared and works normally, the game plays, however the graphics are all messed up. I've looked through the appDB and i either don't understand whether anyone else has had the same problem as me, or don't understand the appDB. or both.

at this stage i'm really keen for some help with taking the next step please. I'd love to get this game running smoothly. I've found some instructions on another site, the battle.net sc2 forum site. I'd REALLY appreciate some help in understanding and enacting them. Apparently a few people have had some success with this version of wine, which is a patched version.

"Try the csmt wine patch for sc2. The framerate is amazing now way better than windows for me, I get 250 FPS on high graphics for early game.

Basically it changes how D3D works so even though sc2 isn't programmed to use multiple cores it does and its working great.
