Civ4 patch can't find installation

For some reason, when I try to install the 1.74 patch for this game, it can't find the installation. No one else seems to have this problem. What am I doing wrong? I ran the winetricks d3dx9_36 like I thought I was supposed to. I've also tried installing the game 3x.

I'm running openSUSE 12.2 64-bit and Wine 1.5.6.

Your Wine version is old. Upgrade to 1.6.

This is the sort of thing I like to do only as a last resort. Since I've seen a lot of reports from people using much earlier versions, I'm inclined to think it wouldn't make a difference.

Versions older than 1.6 are no longer supported. If it doesn't work in 1.6, post terminal output, including the command used to run the exe.

...and it's w/good reason I upgrade as a last resort. I got what they had at http://download.opensuse.org/repositori ... SUSE_12.2/ (1.6) and when I tried it again, I was told that .NET is missing, so it was going to install Mono, which ultimately failed.
In any case, it doesn't seem to have made a difference. I tried it again and it failed in the exact same way. From ~/.wine/drive_c/ I ran:

You should have installed the wine-mono package when you upgraded. The wine-gecko package is also required.

That looks like http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24611. Create a 32 bit wineprefix and install to that.

Wine-mono and wine-gecko are now install.

I got a lot farther this time, but I still have problems. Now I can't load a game and the one I had doesn't look right--graphics rendering is weird.
I started by executing

WINEPREFIX="/home/PenguinLust/wine32" wine /media/CIV4DISC1/setup.exe

and eventually, when everything was installed (for the 4th or 5th time)

WINEPREFIX="/home/PenguinLust/wine32" wine wine32/drive_c/Civ4Patch1.74_Final.exe

that worked. Finally, a new milestone! Then I ran it with

WINEPREFIX="/home/PenguinLust/wine32" wine wine32/drive_c/Program\ Files/Firaxis\ Games/Sid\ Meier\'s\ Civilization\ 4/Civilization4.exe

Then after printing 2 cryptic lines, it just CTDed w/out opening a window. This time it ran the whole intro movie but when I started the game, the graphics looked weird. It was as if the made most the terrain out of clouds. I don't think that's natural. I tried lowering the graphics, which told me I had to restart the game, so I did, but then every time I tried to load it, it froze 75% of the way. I think I need to make a new thread for this.
