I'm under the impression that the only way to install the latest stable version of wine (version 1.4.1) onto ubuntu 10.04 LTS is to install wine 1.3 from the ubuntu repository.

1) I'd like to find out the date of the last build of wine 1.3 in that repository, and how much difference is between that version and the latest stable 1.4.1

2) I'd also like a suggestion: if maximum compatibility with windows XP is the goal (not vista or win 7) then would simply wine 1.2 be a better choice than 1.3/1.4?

Packages are built by the distros; ask Ubuntu.

No.
