MS Office 2010 Errors (32-bit) On Manjaro Linux

Post by Wine_n00b »

Hello Gurus,

I'm at my wits end and need some help please. I hope I provided everything you need to troubleshoot.

OS: Manjaro 8.10 64-bit
Media: MS Office Professional Plus (ISO and EXE) I mainly need it because I have hundreds of notes in OneNote or else I would just use Libre Office.

1) INSTALL BASICS
wine 1.7.21
winetricks 20140302-1
wine-mono 4.5.2.1
wine_gecko 2.24-1
winbind libwbclient 4.1.9-1 (winbind)
lib32-libxml2 2.9.1-1

2) Create a 32-bit Prefix
env WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine32 winetricks dotnet20 msxml6

3) Use winetricks to install
dotnet20 (tried prefixes with and without it)
riched20
corefonts

4) Install Office Pro 2010 32-bit
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine32-office wine OfficeISO/x86/setup.exe (Tried using multi-arch ISO mounted via fuseiso)

- I thought the iso or mount may be bad (even though I used it before on my windows machine) so I downloaded the .exe from MSDN and tried:

WINEPREFIX=~/.wine32 ~/Desktop/en_office_professional_plus_2010_x86_515486.exe

Note: I don't specify it above, but each time I deleted and created a fresh new prefix

"Microsoft Office Pro 2010 encountered an error during setup"

I've gotten this error at least a dozen times (tried several different configurations (no dotnet20, yes dotnet20, no corefonts, yes core fonts), .

Probably not needed, but I even I tried copying the machine.config into the prefix (see step 4)
http://nithinaneeshsct06bt.blogspot.com ... 07-in.html

This is what I could find in systemctl:
rpcbind.service loaded active running RPC bind service
rpcbind.socket loaded active running RPCbind Server Activation Socket

I'm completely at a loss. Please help me. Here's the log:

You should not be installing any winetricks other than perhaps corefonts (not needed, but won't hurt). Try a clean 32 bit wineprefix, and use the original cd rather than an ISO. Also, make sure no background processes are left running from your failed installs.

I just thought of one more thing: you say you have winbind installed, but is it 32 bit winbind? It needs to be.

I installed 32bit winbind, but oddly now I don't get as far as before.

As suggested I didn't use any winetricks. The inital 2010 splash window no longer comes up and the install hangs here:

Correction:

The problem was I read too quickly and therefore didn't fully follow your instructions. I was still using the mounted ISO. I re-read what you said, and burned the ISO to DVD. Once I did this the install completed perfectly. Thank you very much!

I have one final, but MAJOR problem. The entire reason I installed office was that I need OneNote. Word and Excel (the only other two I installed) work fine. However when I run OneNote I get the following error. "OneNote cannot start because the Desktop Experience feature is not installed. Install it in the Windows Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn WIndows features on or off."

https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. ... &iId=23632

It says the fix is to install Office2010SP1, but that's exactly the ISO I burned and installed. What would you recommend I do?

According to http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... spid=14897, that error message occurs in Windows Server 2008. What version of Windows do you have Wine set to? It should be left at XP.

Just for testing purposes, I followed the wine removal instructions and attempted to install via "Playonlinux". Same situation. Word and Excel work, but I get the same error for OneNote:

"OneNote cannot start because the Desktop Experience feature is not installed. Install it in the Windows Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn WIndows features on or off."

I have uninstalled PlayonLinux and I'm back to the wine version. What would you suggest as the next step?

Personally, Powerpoint crash if I do not set riched20 to native with wine 1.7.22

You're right, it does, and now that I think of it, so does OneNote. That's http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14980, and that's why the AppDB howto says to set the override after installing. However, it is neither necessary nor recommended to use winetricks to install riched20 because Office 2007 & 2010 install their own version of riched20, which is not the same as the one installed by winetricks. All that the user should do is set the override after installing Office 2007/2010. No native dlls are needed to install.

Wine_n00b: Have you set the override for riched20? You need to. (I assumed you had because on my system OneNote and Powerpoint will simply crash without any popup messages without the override.)

Talking about that, would you recommand to set riched20 to native only for POWERPNT.EXE and ONENOTE.EXE, or also for the whole wineprefix?

I recommend it for the whole wineprefix, because there are also minor issues with some dialog boxes in the other apps without it. That's also part of the reason why Office should be put in a separate wineprefix: setting it globally will work fine for all Office apps, but non-Office apps in the same wineprefix will not be able to use the special version of riched20 installed by Office, and will have problems because of it.

Here are my latest steps, based on your recommendation above.

env WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine32_MSO2010 winecfg

wine: created the configuration directory '/home/eldnar/.wine_MSO2010'
err:module:load_builtin_dll failed to load .so lib for builtin L"winemp3.acm": libmpg123.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

err:mscoree:LoadLibraryShim error reading registry key for installroot
err:mscoree:LoadLibraryShim error reading registry key for installroot
err:mscoree:LoadLibraryShim error reading registry key for installroot
fixme:ntdll:NtLockFile I/O completion on lock not implemented yet
fixme:iphlpapi:NotifyAddrChange (Handle 0xece880, overlapped 0xece88c): stub
wine: configuration in '/home/eldnar/.wine_MSO2010' has been updated.
err:module:load_builtin_dll failed to load .so lib for builtin L"winemp3.acm": libmpg123.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

1) Verified the prefix was XP
2) Changed riched20 (native)

3) env WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine32_MSO2010 wine /run/media/eldnar/OFFICE14/x86/setup.exe

- Freezes at Product Key Window. I could not type in the window. -

4) Change to riched20 (builtin)

Can now type in the product key and proceed with install

5) Do a custom install, remove Access, InfoPath, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Microsoft SharePoint Workspace Visio Viewer Note: This is a detail I left out of my original steps

a) Word opens
b) Excel opens
c) OneNote will not open (it doesn't seem to crash outright, it just seems to think a dependancy is missing or that it's on Windows 2008, based on the error)

"OneNote cannot start because the Desktop Experience feature is not installed. Install it in the Windows Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn WIndows features on or off."

Are there any additional logs or data I can provide to assist troubleshooting?

You've discovered the reason I said to set the override for riched20 after installing: the installer can't use native because it hasn't been installed yet. You didn't mention setting riched20 to native after installing, so please do that.

I don't think doing a custom install should make a difference, but try a standard install. It's possible one of the apps you elected not to install included whatever dependency OneNote is looking for.

Also, please double-check your version of Office. Open Excel and go to File, Help. The version number should be on the right, under "About Microsoft Excel". The version should be 14.0.6029.1000 or higher. If it's lower, you don't have SP1 installed.

I understand, and made the riched20 change. Thank you.

I checked the version, as you suggested, and it was NOT SP1 (which is weird because it was the SP1 ISO from MSDN). Regardless, I downloaded SP1 and installed it. ONENOTE NOW WORKS! AWESOME!

My final problem is activation. This seems to be another entire ball of wax. I have a legitimate product key for Office, but cannot seem to activate it. My google search seems to provide no definite answer. What steps do I need to follow to activate it?

Is it a volume license? There's a known bug with activating those, and no workaround if it's MAK activation. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30033

I assume volume license is the one from an employer. Mine is a standard key, that I downloaded from my MSDN account, would that be MAK?

That would be tragic to get this far only to not be able to actually use it...

Does the phone activation method work?

My volume license is from my employer; most people's are. I don't have an MSDN account, but it's possible that licenses issued through MSDN could also be volume ones. MAK activation is from Microsoft's servers; the other type is KMS, which activates from a local server installed on a corporate network.

Googling, I did find this: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums ... icegeneral. Since it turned out that you didn't have the version of Office that you thought you had, maybe you also generated the wrong type of key.

I have never tried phone activation. My copy is fully functional without activating; I just get a prompt to activate every time I start an Office app, and the title bar is red and says it's not activated.

Hi,

Thanks for all the info in the thread, finally got office2010 installed. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote start up and seem to be running without much fuss. My only missing feature is OneNotes ability to sync over SkyDrive/OneDrive, says the service is unavailable. Have you cracked that problem? Cant seem to find a solution.

At the time of writing this I'm running Ubuntu 14.10 x64 with Wine 1.7(.26 I think). Thanks in advance for any info.

With regards
